Soldiers Keep Promise to Village, Gain Trust

ABU ETHA, Iraq - 1st Cavalry Division Soldiers recently set up a soccer field in the tiny village of Abu Etha, fulfilling a promise made by the 82nd Airborne Division.  

The village had been a hostile area for the Soldiers up until a month ago when First Team troopers started doing daily patrols in the area.

Capt. Ben Ring, company commander of Company A, 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment - "Since we've come here, over the past six weeks, we've been very friendly and we've engaged the populace, and now the kids run up to our vehicles and greet us with cheers."

"This is pretty much what it's all about," Ring said. "Our mission here in Iraq can be tiresome. It can be difficult and very arduous, but events like these really make it worthwhile. When you see the expressions on kids' faces as you arrive with soccer goals and they are cheering, it really warms your heart."

We often think about these projects in terms of "winning hearts and minds", but these activities also remind our soldiers that the locals are people too, so we are more apt to act accordingly.

I suspect that our accused prison guards had very little, if any, interaction with the normal Iraq people.

Liberalism caused all these things that happened in the prisons in Iraq. So the liberals in this country need to examine themselves and their actions. They are the ones that took prayer out of school, teach early childhood sex, teach that homosexual behavior is ok, let MVT and BET be available to all children to see, promote the porn industry, teach about free sex, distribute condoms to high school students. So the liberal promote all this kind of activity that the soldiers are doing over in Iraq, so what is the problem…..?

Perhaps, in terms of setting the conditions for the conduct of the soldiers. But there have always been individuals in the military who don't do what they are supposed to; regardless of whether they grew up in the city or on a farm, in a conservative or a liberal environment. That is why there is military discipline, military justice, military training, and why we give military unit commanders extrordinary power over the lives of their people. So although the individuals concerned must be held accountable for their individual transgressions, the unit commanders are just as accountable for not establishing the discipline & conducting the training & exercising their authority to ensure the mission was accomplished and accomplished right--regardless of the type of people society handed to them to turn into soldiers.

And what is the difference between the undisciplined, soldiers in name only prison guard criminals and the real soldiers described in the article above? They came from the same society and the laws of big numbers says they probably have the same average ages, education, intelligence, income, family circimstances, etc. The difference is the unit above has caring, effective military leadership and our prison guards did not.

Not that I disagree with you about the pernicious effects of liberalism on overall society!

Thanks for posting this. We need more of this kind of news. Lots more. We can circulate it on e-mail, since the media refuse to give it any attention. The media no longer have control of the only means of disseminating information widely and quickly. Let's take advantage of the resources we do have.
