The PRAGMATIC thing to do in this instance, both for the good of the Republican Party AND Conservatism would have been for Santorum and Bush to stay out of the Specter/Toomey race and help the grassroots rid the Senate of Liberal Democrat Specter once and for all.

A vote for the opponent, like a vote for Hoeffel over Specter is twice as damaging as a vote for a third party candidate.

Actually the art of politics IS compromise.

It's not "compromise" when only one side makes the compromises.

It's concession.

The "G"OP method of "compromise" is to keep moving more and more to the left, while the RATs keep moving the target furter to the left.

The "art of compromise" you speak of would only come into play if both sides were "compromising". If both sides "compromise" a bit, in order to move closer to the middle, to "common ground" as it were, then "the art of compromise" might have some merit (dubious, IMO, but that's beside the point, given the reality).

There isn't any "art of compromise" component in the "G"OP's pathetic tango to the left. There's only the increasing shame of incremental defeat.

No kidding. But the both sides compromise when it comes to Republicans and Dems.

Dems were upset with Clinton for compromising with the Republican Congress on so many issues.

The Dems compromised and got Kerry because they knew Dean the leftwing Bush hater was unelectable.

One of the candidates led the crusade to prevent the appointment of Robert Bork to the Supreme Court, on the grounds that he was a strict interpreter of the original intent of the Constitution. The other has a clear record of supporting only justices who believe in original intent.

Good point.

If this is his last term and won't seek reelection, he has no reason to swing right or to care about the GOP, let alone us conservatives.

You can say that again.

I did, you did, a lot of us did.

We weren't psychic or prescient. We just looked at all of the evidence and knew who Arlen was and what he would do.

He proved it 12 hours after his primary victory and again just days after the general election. Let's hope that there is enough pressure on the GOP to finally form a spine and keep Specter off the committee or at least out of the Chairmanship.
