They are just smaller versions of the full-sized medal. Thanks - I think I've just passed medal-ology 101. So, now that I have the facts - I don't think there's any difference between Kerry throwing his ribbons or his medals (or a friends ribbons or medals) over a fence - they all represent the same thing (and the same thing he was trashing) - respect for America.
There have been some great threads here on fr about Kerry's "service" record. Maybe he knows what a sham it was, and is embarrassed by it - ok, doubtful. He is in no way fit to be Commander-In-Chief of the U.S.A.

That's exactly right. It's the symbolism that is the issue, not whether there was a piece of medal dangling from it. He disrespected America, no matter what he actually threw.
