"Bush can count on the Right"
By David Keene

Last week, the Democratic National Committee began distributing several pages of quotes from conservatives critical of President Bush on a variety of fronts and suggesting to the media that the fact that we don't agree with the man on everything all of the time is evidence of real weakness in his base. Some in the media took the bait, and many of us got calls from reporters wondering if the president can really rely on the strong support he's going to need from his conservative base to win in November.

Now, the summer silly season is fast approaching, so perhaps one has to cut these folks a little slack, but their reasoning defies logic and represents little more than a hopeful fantasy among those who go to bed at night hoping the conservative Republican coalition will somehow fracture. It isn't going to happen... at least not this time around.

While the Democrats were circulating their theory, the president himself was addressing the 40th anniversary banquet of the American Conservative Union here in Washington. To say that he was well received by the audience of more than 700 activist conservative leaders would be a gross understatement. Indeed, we welcomed him as one of our own. Those attending agreed, I think, with my observation in introducing him that they, like millions of conservatives around the country, are prepared to do their part to see to it that he is re-elected this fall.

Does this enthusiastic support mean that we agree with his every act as president? Of course not. But he knew when he accepted our invitation and when he took the microphone that he was speaking to friends who believe he's done a remarkable job given the challenges he's faced since taking office in January 2001. He knew, too, that we all consider ourselves part of the same team and that he can count on us both to work for his re-election and to prod him to govern as we hope he will.

Frankly, those hoping for a collapse of the president's base don't seem to be able to grasp the simple fact that conservatives can differ with their friends on matters of policy but rally behind them if they are doing a good job overall, and are quite capable of recognizing the difference between friends, allies and those, like John Kerry, who oppose everything they want. In fact, it is not all that hard to tell when we are really mad enough at those who need our support to take a walk.

When many of us concluded prior to the 1972 elections that President Nixon had forfeited his claim to conservative support, conservatives ran a protest candidate against him in New Hampshire.. When his successor did everything he could to infuriate us, we almost denied him his party's nomination in 1976. In 1992, conservatives flocked to Pat Buchanan because they were upset and offended by the current president's father's abandonment of the promises he'd made during his 1988 campaign.

None of those protests succeeded, but each reflected deep discontent within the GOP base. In none of those cases did it take a Democrat with a divining rod and a bunch of handouts to find out we were upset.

There was no talk of a primary protest against the current president this year for the simple reason that, while we might oppose such things as his Medicare prescription drug program and believe he could do far more to cut government spending, few believe he's abandoned us or the principles we like to believe we represent. No president is perfect, but most conservatives believe that this is one who deserves another term.

This doesn't mean that conservatives will agree with everything the president says or does in the future. We'll agree with him when he's right, urge him to change course when we believe he's wrong and work as hard as we have to to make sure he's there to listen to us for another four years.

Moreover, even those few with lingering doubts about whether he will be able to deliver as much as they'd like in his second term know that Kerry is not the answer to anyone's prayers. Ideologically, stylistically and in every other way, the Democratic nominee is just the guy to get conservative juices flowing.

So the president's political coalition is in pretty good shape, and certainly in far better shape than that on which his opponent will have to depend. Ralph Nader, the spoiler out there, is not a conservative but a nutty liberal who thinks the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate should be rejected by Democrats as not liberal enough.

Perhaps someone should be distributing a few pages of what Nader thinks about Kerry.

David Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union, is a managing associate with the Carmen Group, a D.C.-based governmental affairs firm

If you know someone who thinks that the moniker "religion of peace" still has any merit, please ask them to judge for themselves, the differance between Jesus, and the "Prophet Muhammed".
.............
Jesus:
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted."
"Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth."
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied."
"Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy."
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. "
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God."
"Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
"Blessed are you when {people} insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me."
"Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you." (Matthew 5:3-12)

Jesus did not once, advocate violence, intead He advised: "Turn the other cheek." Neither did any of the prophets in the Bible, they were never involved in in the biblical battles that you read about.

Not so with Muhammed, who killed over 700 people.
....................

Now, compare the Beatitudes of Jesus, with words of the the "Prophet" Muhammed:

FROM THE KORAN:

"O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for friends." - [al-Ma'idah 5:51.11]

Verses in the Quran concerning fighting and killing for the cause of Allah- Here are but a few passages:

-Muslims are encouraged to be wholly occupied (Sura 2:273) with fighting for Allah's cause. - Allah will give "a far richer recompense to those who fight for him" (Sura 4:96).

- Regarding infidels (unbelievers), they are the Muslim's "inveterate enemies" (Sura 4:101).

Muslims are to "arrest them, besiege them and lie in ambush everywhere" (Sura 9:5) for them.

They are to "seize them and put them to death wherever you find them, kill them wherever you find them, seek out the enemies of Islam relentlessly" (Sura 4:90).

-"Fight them until Islam reigns supreme" (Sura 2:193).

"Cut off their heads, and cut off the tips of their fingers" (Sura 8:12).

- If a Muslim does not go to war, Allah will kill him (Sura 9:39). He is to be told, "the heat of war is fierce, but more fierce is the heat of Hell-fire" (Sura 9:81).

- A Muslim must "fight for the cause of Allah with the devotion due to him" (Sura 22:78)

- Muslims must make war on the infidels (unbelievers) who live around them (Sura 9:123).

- Muslims are to be "ruthless to unbelievers" (Sura 48:29).

- A Muslim should "enjoy the good things" he has gained by fighting (Sura 8:69).

- A Muslim can kill any person he wishes if it be a "just cause" (Sura 6:152).

- Allah loves those who "fight for his cause" (Sura 61:3).
Anyone who fights against Allah or renounces Islam in favor of another religion shall be "put to death or crucified or have their hands and feet cut off alternative sides" (Sura 5:34).

- "Whoever changes his Islamic religion, kill him."- Sahih Al-Bukhari (9:57)

- Slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush. (Koran 9:5)

- ( the unbeliever)Take him and fetter him and expose him to hell fire. (Koran 69:30-37)

- I will instill terror into the hearts of the unbelievers, Smite ye above their necks and smite all their finger tips of them. (Koran 8:12)

- They should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides. (Koran 5:33)

- "Know that paradise is under the shades of swords." - Sahih al-Bukhari Vol 4 p55

...Please keep this in your files, as a reminder, when you hear about new atrocities committed "in the name of Allah."

I'll take yer words under advisement, my FRiend...
however, I still don't believe making this a Holy War is gonna help us get the problem fixed.

Jews, Christians, & Muslims can coexist as long as we universally agree that senseless violence against innocents is EVIL.

>"I still don't believe making this a Holy War is gonna help us get the problem fixed."<

You misunderstand me, Mud. I'm not advocating a "Holy War", and I'm not advocating "nuking Mecca", or anything like it. But until we get Muslims as a whole to look at their violent suicide cult for what it is, we won't win this fight.

To this day, most muslims believe that the Jewish holocaust didn't happen, that it was a fabrication.
You see Mud? This religion must be confronted, just like the Nazis and the KKK were. Because...they are ALL facist at their roots. And as long as we do not require them to look in the mirror, at their own bizarre faith, nothing will change.

One last thing to consider.
Name one great writer, piece of literature, etc, that has come out of the Islamic world.
Russia has Tolstoy, etc.
England has Shakespeare,etc.
We have Mark Twain, etc, etc.
But name one author from the Islamic CULTure.
You can't... because the Islamo-facsists kill them, or threaten to kill them- IE; Salmon Rushdie

How about art.
Nope. They destroy it- remember the cliff carvings in Afganistan?
Music.
Nope. Iran beheaded some musicians not too long ago. Their music offended the Mullahs.
Nope.
Industry?
Nada. What industry? If France, Germany, Russia, and the US didn't bring our engineers to the middle-east, that oil would still be in the ground.
Scools of higher learning? Medicine?
NONE; Almost all Middle-easterners travel to the US, or Europe, for their college education. There are NO reputed colleges in the Middle-East, that I'm aware of. Oh, wait...Isael has some very good colleges...but they aren't muslim, are they? :^)
Zilch.
electonics? Computer technology?
Nyet. I can't think of a single thing that has been invented, or built in the 22 Muslim countries.

And so it goes, not because muslim Arabs are dumb, they are very smart..bottom line:
It's because of their intolerant, hateful, facsist religion.
End of story.

I agree with that...I'm just thinking that once Mideasterners get a taste of peace and prosperity, they'll start pressuring the Islamo-fascists from spreading their terror.

Les,

An excellent post, with much useful information (and, belive me, I'll be using it). I’ve saved it to my hard drive. Thank you!

Because there seems to be so much confusion over Christ’s teachings regarding violence and war, I taught an adult Sunday school class on the subject last year shortly after the Iraq war began. The class (consisting of about forty-five to fifty adults over the age of thirty) had a very lively discussion on the subject, that continued after the subsequent church service was over (we met in the church library).

Many people, even Christians, believe that Christ’s admonition that we should ‘turn the other cheek’ should be interpreted to mean that He does not condone violence in any context, even in self-defense. But nothing could be further from the truth.

Christ tells us to stand firm in our beliefs to the point of persecution, and even martyrdom. But that does not mean that we are to lie down in a prostrate position and allow the enemies of liberty to have their way with us. Unlike Islam, genuine Christianity is not a religion of violence. But, contrary to much popular opinion, neither is it a passive one.

In Luke 12:51-53, Christ tells us:

Do you suppose I came to establish peace on earth? No indeed, I have come to bring division. For from now on, five members of a family will be divided, three against two and two against three; father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother…

It is a righteous division that he came to bring. Not a division based on desire for power, wealth, or land.

In Matthew 10:21-22 and 34-49 He continues along the same lines:

Brother will betray brother to death, and the father his child; children will turn against their parents and send them to their death. All will hate you for your allegiance to me; but the man who holds out to the end will be saved….You must not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a son’s wife against her mother-in-law; and a man will find his enemies under his own roof. No man is worthy of me who cares more for father or mother than for me; no man is worthy of me who cares for son or daughter; no man is worthy of me who does not take up his cross and walk in my footsteps. By gaining his life a man will lose it; by losing his life for my sake, he will gain it.

And in Luke 22:37-38, He tells us:

It is different now … whoever has a purse had better take it with him, and his pack too; and if he has no sword, let him sell his cloak to buy one.

I believe there are two questions regarding war and violence that a Christian must ask in order to know how Christ would view them: (1) Is the war justified? And if so, (2) how should it be conducted?

Scripture does not literally say, ‘You must go to war against terrorism,’ but many Christian leaders believe that scripture (both Old and New Testament) does provide general guidelines under which self-defensive war should be waged.

(1) All reasonable peace efforts must be exhausted before war is even considered an option.

(2) War must be declared by a principled, legal authority (i.e., the US Congress – as opposed to the UN, or another such globalist entity)

(3) The war should be a response to an invasion, or an imminent risk of invasion, or a threat to human liberty. Economic, land, or power motives are not righteous motives for war.

(4) There must be a sense of apposite degree. You don’t need a sledge hammer to kill an ant. Appropriate muscle should be used, in an appropriate timeframe … and no more. Excess violence is sinful.

And, once war becomes an inevitability, Biblical principles should apply to the conflict itself:

A draft is an ineffective way to go into combat. If one has to put a gun to people’s heads to make them go to war, something is initially wrong with the war itself, or the nation being defended. If a war has a just cause, and the nation about to embark on it is worth defending, there should not be a problem amassing an army. A man’s free will should be called into play, and a man capable of taking part in a just war is committing a sin if he turns down the call to do so.

No women or children should be involved in actual combat. Biblically, a man could join the Hebrew army at the age of twenty. Anyone younger was forbidden to fight. A nation that enlists women in its defense is not worthy of defense. Scripturally, man is expected to defend and protect his household, and women are described as far superior to men in other areas – combat not being one of them.

Such scriptural principles should be employed even in warfare, by those who are in decision-making positions. Those principles are to be taught to all participants, and their application must be strictly enforced. Disobedience must result in punishment.

It’s interesting how many of your excerpts from the Koran fly in the face of Christ’s teachings. Very simplistically put, I believe that Christ’s message was one of peace, love, and obedience (to the Lord) -- as opposed to much of the Koran’s embracing of ruthlessness, hatred, and enslavement. His message is accompanied by an immutable list of rights and wrongs, which, if embraced and followed, will result in final glory. He requires us to stand firm in seeking to do what is right in the Lord’s eyes. And, if in our resolution, we are required to fight – as a last resort – then we are called to do so. Apathy, passivity, and cowardice are not to be equated with a desire for peace.
