Good article. If it's unrealistic to return to the 1949 borders, then it should be unrealistic to return to the 1967 borders too.

Exactly. Makes you wonder why President Bush is moving so fast to show Iraq's few genuine democrats and friends of America the door by bringing the Ba'athists back in. The old joke has it with the UN's Lakhdar Brahimi in charge, we may yet get a kinder and gentler Ba'athist regime in Iraq - minus Saddam Hussein. As Mark Steyn would put it, the more things change, the more they remain the same, along with the State Department's unflinching support of the anti-American Palestinian despot, Yasser Arafart. So much for all the maiden promises of democratizing the Middle East.

The latest innovation was a suicide-bomber arrested with explosives bearing HIV-infected blood, the thinking being that anyone who survived would get Aids.
First I heard of this new twist on the homicide bomb. Thanks Pokey - another mother lode of Styen witticisms to mull over, although lately, he'sbeen down with the way things are going.

Thank you!
...The only way the Palestinians will get any kind of state is if Israel and America inflict it on them ...
The phrasing of this is perfect, inflicting a state on them is exactly right. The Palis screamed for years for one, hoping against hope that they would actually have one and the responsibilities attendant on such a condition.
Knowing that President Bush said any state that harbors terrorists or promotes terrorism is asking for intervention, would mean one scud to Israel and the Pali state disappears.

President Bush stated the obvious: it was "unrealistic" to expect a return to the armistice lines of 1949, and theres no point wasting time discussing the Palestinian "right of return" to whats now Israel, because its never going to happen.More proof -- as if any were still needed -- that George W. Bush is a great President, and a great man.

For 10 years, in northern Iraq, the Kurds have run a pleasant, civilised, pluralist, democratic de facto state, but external realities require them to be denied one de jure ... the Palestinian Authoritys thugs, incompetents and bespoke apologists have been lavished with EU aid and transformed their land into an ugly, bankrupt Arafatist squat. But external realities require the world to defer to the "Chairman" as a de jure head of state, lacking merely a state to head.I'm puzzled by this. What "external realities" (Oh, come on, Mark, don't start talking like a politician!) are stopping the U.S. from recognizing or dissing anyone we want to?
