Any mention of draft by the left is meant to make the war less popular. They know it will not happen so they can try to sell the draft and scare people. No one ios going to call there bluff.

Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel is a Republican. Dems are saying this is how Bush is floating a trial balloon.

Exactly right.
Rangel's transparent scheme is to make this war and this military as enormously unpopular as the Viet Nam War and the military of that era.
He looks around, sees how high military morale is and how much popular support there is for our President, and it makes him froth at the mouth!
Quick, get the hydrophobia vaccine!

If we can't maintain the troop levels in Iraq, Boortz will be the first to support a draft. Mark my words.
To: NotchJohnson
I agree the talk of recreating the draft is being circulated to stir up dissent about the war in Iraq.
How long do you think it would take to set up the machinery to start drafting young men and presumably women into the military? Even with an all out effort and no arguments from Congress, I would bet at least 18 months before the first draftees would be reporting for training. Given the political wrangling that would more realistically happen if attempts were made to again start drafting men into military service, it would be years if ever before anyone would be drafted --far too late to help manpower needs in Iraq.
The draft is dead and I would no more expect to see it revived than I would expect to see a T-Rex cavorting on my front lawn.
To: NotchJohnson
Reinstating the draft might be a good thing.
All the cowardly, anti-american, socialist liberals would burn their cards and head to Canada and other socialists countries where they belong.

You don't know Boortz very well. I strongly doubt that.
Boortz is very much a small-l libertarian. He is very much *not* a natural supporter of a draft.

I was thinking the reason they think they need a draft is because of all the downsizing over the past ten years or so. Then they asked Fred Thompson about it on TV this morning, and he said he agreed with Hagel and that he has been saying for years that we need to bring back the draft.
He said most of the people serving are lower middle class and lower class. NOT TRUE for this town. I know three young men who chose to serve USA because they wanted to, they weren't ready to go to college, etc. They had college funds waiting for them. They chose the military. Robby is in Navy. Ryan is in Army. Brady is in Marines. BY CHOICE and these boys were from upper middle class. Robby will get his college fund to do whatever he wants to do with when he gets out of Navy.
Fred Thompson said it is because they have been downsizing in the 1990s. BINGO! It was THEIR mistake and they want to spread the suffering out. If any of my kids chooses to enlist, I will drive them to the enlistment office. If they choose not to enlist, I would not want them to be forced into it. And they would have to draft females, too, after all the NOW stuff.
When you draft people into the military you don't get soldiers who want to be there. It makes it dangerous for our side.

I listen to him almost every day. The war trumps all for him now, even small government. Heck, he has even endorsed Dubya: the most pro-big government president since FDR!

This is being done by the left to stir up college campuses.

Fine....if they feel the urge to institute a draft than the first ones to go should be the children of all the Federal and State legislatures....because they are the least represented.

Is that why Fred Thompson also endorsed a draft? Is he part of the liberal plot to "stir up college campuses?"
To: Captain Kirk
The only problem with that theory is that Thompson has been saying that for years.

One indicator will be the next few weeks. I predict (mark my words again) the more conservatives will holding forth on the virtues of draft. I hope I am wrong.
To: Captain Kirk
There may be a few more Senate RINOS.

They want it neatly in place in case Hillary runs for Pres. They know no one will ever volunteer if she gets into office. (God forbid she would win).
