I think the most useful way to handle this is for you to post your J'accuse of Woodward, particularly on the three points I mentioned, and then I will respond. Granted, it would be helpful for Woodward to respond to the specifics raised against him. In that regard, regarding Powell, I don't think Woodward asserted as to when he got the comments from Powell, but maybe I missed it. The most serious and specific charge of Woodward is over the 700 million. Bear in mind that Woodward taped everybody but the president (I think that is what I read), and the president's men are not denying what Woodward said the president said.

When my judgment changes about Woodward, of course I will admit it and post it. But it won't happen without hard facts.

Powell DID deny that he said what Woodward said he said.

I would also direct you to the transcript of Woodward's interview with Donald Rumsfeld on the DoD site, where in the transcript Rumsfeld points out how much Woodward got wrong in the FIRST book.

Sorry, Torie, but Woodward looks really bad on this one.

In addition, Prince Bandar has denied the accusations of interference in the election as well.

You mean I'm piling on? :-}

I can handle it. Come and get me. :) (Heck, I am in that elite 2% of Freepers that do not think Gorelick should be bounced from the commission.)

Rumsfeld says that Woodward mischarterized what he said in a conversation where the transcript is posted? That is interesting, if that is what you meant. Bandar's denial is not worth anything. Of course he would deny it. Powell would have to deny too, or resign. I am under the impression that Woodward has tapes of what Powell said to him. Can anyone confirm that?

Read this and then get back to me. I heard Woodward on 60 minutes. His characterizations of Powell vis a vis his relationship with Cheney and Bush were outright lies.

Woodward says he has tapes of his sources. Whether he has an interview with Powell is another story.

You need to think this through. I ws willing to give Woodward the benefit of the doubt, but Powell's statements pretty much charge him with twisting the truth.

Not really much there, although I am vague about how specific Woodward was that Colin was not aware of the plan laid out to Bandar. The rest is all atmospherics. I suspect that at one point, there was tension between Cheney and Powell. But if there was, clearly the two men got over it.

Look, Powell has almost a duty to smooth this one over. To take his take as gospel, particularly when Woodward has not had a chance to respond in full, would be a mistake. I hope we find out if Woodward has tapes to back up what he said Powell said, and Woodward's interpretation of what Powell said.

In any event, I think Powell over time changed his mind (that is my distinct impression), and got on board with both his heart and mind, perhaps after the French screwed him. None of this matters anyway, as to when Powell was estranged, and when he was not. I want to know more about the 700 million.

No,no. Woodward stated emphatically that the Secretary of State and the Vice President do NOT talk to each other and that an animus exists, now.

Think about it, what are the ramifications of such a situation politically and actually with such animus proliferating in our government?

And then ask yourself why Woodward would so mischaracterise a friendship that has existed between Cheney and Powell for 17 years.

Only one possible reason, he has an agenda because his reporting is factually wrong.

It might be helpful to post the transcript on this point, if it can be found. Is your word "now" meant to also modify "do NOT talk with each other?" Calibrating animus is a subjective judgment in any event, and means nothing, as long as both men can carry out their duties, and communicate with each other, and both are mature men and pros, and I am sure they can.

Is it just me, or does Woodward sound like a candidate for special education when he speaks?

that the slow, condesending tone they take because they feel they are talking to the sheeple - they are talking to people who are beneath them intellectually (so they feel). that's all.

Here you go.

”The relationship between Cheney and Powell is essentially broken down. They can't talk. They don't communicate,” says Woodward. “Powell feels that Cheney drove the decision to go to war in Iraq. And Cheney feels that Powell has not been sufficiently supportive of the president in the war or in the aftermath.”

Powell says they speak every day. Somebodys lying.

Oh, as an aside, Eric Holder is on Hannity and Colmes now defending Jamie Gorelick.

Eric Holder was the one who looked the other way when the pardons were being issued, because he had been promised the AG spot in a Gore administration.

If W's team keeps blitzing the airwaves, nobody will even remember who's running for President against him. Who was that guy? Long face, whiny, skinny, served in Korea or something.

Exactamundo!! ANd as a bonus it also reminds Americans of how great the Bush team is.

You know, I am beginning to think that they were anticipating this book blitz. If I were Joe Wilson (next up on the Bush Bash Book Tour) I would be a bit nervous.
