Simple: he survived by helping to send them there. He was a "runner" for the Hungarian Judenrat; a pretty low-life Nazi collaborator, but a collaborator none the less. He fled Hungary in 1947 not to escape the Nazis - they had lost the war in 1945, you may recall - but to escape retribution at the hands of the survivors of the Nazi regime.
