Call me an optimist but I am now looking forward to the Commission's recommendations. They are already expressing concerns about the lack of safety in our immigration procedures. In the interest of national safety they can refuse political correctness (being technically above politics) and not wishing to be blamed for failing to recommend safeguards to terrorist entry into the US, they may well touch the third rail of politics i.e. entry of aliens over our land borders. If they come out with a firm and insistant demand for border control, it will be impossible for the political parties to refuse to adopt same. Republicans in Congress can insist on illegal immigration controls and GWB and more importantly the democrats will be forced to concur risking a tremendous backlash against them should they not go along. Knowing that it is inevitable that we will be attacked at some point by those who cross our land borders, they would have to shoulder the entire responsiblity for same.

Another example of poor journalistic editorializing in the headline for this piece. "Partys clash" would be consistant with the story when you view Kean as the liberal he is in all his actions. The Republicans that have spoken out have been in agreement, the total opposite of the spin the editor is wishing to propagandize.
