By May 1996, Scarpa had relayed to the FBI the types and densities of explosives that Yousef said he could get past airport metal detectors and X-ray machines. Scarpa also learned how to conceal wiring and a 9-volt battery needed to detonate a bomb in an electric razor or toy.

Yousef described how explosives and detonators could be hidden in shoe heels - five years before terrorist Richard Reed tried to ignite his sneakers on a flight from Paris to Miami.

So, if I have this straight, Janet Reno KNEW of a potential plot with SHOE BOMBS -- and she knew FIVE YEARS before it happened?

The National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States will hold its tenth public hearing on April 13-14, 2004, in Washington, DC. The two-day hearing will examine the performance of law enforcement and the Intelligence Community prior to September 11 and evaluate post-9/11 reforms in these areas.

Beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Capitol Hill (Hart 216), the Commission will hear from current and former top-level officials from our nation’s law enforcement and intelligence communities. Attorney General John Ashcroft, Director of Central Intelligence George J. Tenet, FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III will testify before the Commission, as well as former Attorney General Janet Reno, former FBI Director Louis J. Freeh, and former Acting FBI Director Thomas J. Pickard. In addition to witness testimony, four staff statements will be delivered during the course of the proceedings. The hearing will resume at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 14. It's Not Life, But Close

Colombo mobster Gregory Scarpa Jr. was slammed last week with a 40 year sentence for racketeering and other crimes by a Brooklyn Federal Judge who rejected his plea for leniency and downplayed his spying on a known terrorist for the FBI.

Judge Reena Raggi dismissed his year of spying against World Trade Center bombing mastermind Ramzi Yousef while they were prison mates as insignificant at best and more likely "part of a scam."

At his trial, Scarpa testified that he alerted the FBI of plots to kill a judge and a prosecutor. He also described how he used a tiny two-inch spy camera to photograph bomb formulas that Yousef slipped through the cracks in the wall of their cells.

Scarpa, 47, was acquitted of five murders which each carried a life sentence, but convicted of racketeering and separate counts of loansharking, bookmaking and tax fraud. He admitted at trial that he was inducted into the Mafia, but claimed the crimes in his six-count indictment were all committed by his father, Greg Sr., a Colombo capo and a top-echelon FBI informant for 30 years.
