Check out this delusional DUmmy:
The Iraq war has turned out to be a complete disaster and the economy is crap. We haven't found Bin Laden, we're racking up record deficits, and the Red Sox still can't win a Series. Why the hell wouldn't Bush's ratings be down? You really have to start to wonder about those poor deranged souls still supporting him.
Man, I can't wait to see their reaction in November, if a bunch of them are holding on to hopes like this. Most of them sure don't have a clue for being the most "intelligent" beings on the earth!

"Nor do they include those who leave the 'employee' workforce to become self-employed, by starting their own enterprise."
Which would mean that they are employed, thus their not showing up in the count.

Striking workers count as unemployed??? You've got to be kidding me! I think so .. I do know my neighbor (who's union).. when his place shuts down for a couple weeks every year .. the employees collected unemployment
I guess we should keep an eye on the Unions the closer we get to election time

"Why do we have to import foreigners when there are probably kids right here in this country who need summer employment?"
It's the disconnect between the new college summer break and the tourist season on the Cape & Islands. US college students begin their summer break in May - before the start of the'season'. Then they go back to school in August - well before the end of the'season', which at least for Nantucket (I used to hire people there for the bank, usually from County Cork, Ireland) goes until Columbus Day.
The needs of the employers do not fit well with the US student population.

The numbers are truly BEYOND stunning. This almost makes up for I believe it was January's much-less than expected job growth. My goodness.

The self-employed do not show up anywhere. Their status doesn't show up in the unemployment rate, of course, but more importantly, the newly-self-employed are not counted in job creation. I'll say that again:
If an individual starts his own business, this is not counted as the creation of a job.

"The rates also don't include people who "gave up searching for a job" and went into business for themselves which after all helps us all to have more people creating wealth."
To not include people that work for themselves or start their own business is understandible, they are technically employed. Those that gave up searching for a job are still technically unemployed. They should be counted.

For John F. Seinfeld, there's *nothing* to say about the economy without depriving his campaign of the rationale its in search of.

They will try, but even the news networks won't fall for that.
The headlines tonight will be: shockingly high growth rate, unemployment held steady (even though it went slightly up for some odd reason).
The news reports will be focusing on the numbers, not the UE rate.

You have made a great point, but the pure hypocrisy of Dems on the one hand decrying outsourcing and unemployment, while on the other hand advocating importing workers is staggering. If there are so many people out there desperately in need of work, whether college students or not, there should be plenty of people to fill these jobs. Unless, of course, there really aren't that many people looking for jobs......

They're in complete denial over there at DU. Utter disbelief, so they are lying to themselves to make them feel better.

"Likewise, the lower end worker that has given up and gone on welfare pretty much permanently isn't counted. But these have always been with us and really aren't (IMO) a wotrhwhile indicator of the health of the economy and employment."
Why not? They are unemployed, correct? If they are able to work, they should still count. To not count them is to say they don't exist.
I would be interested in the returns also, it would be interesting to see. I could be possible that the averages don't change much if the upper end gains a lot and the lower drops a lot, but I would still be interested to see.
