You say that as if being the richest nation in the world is a bad thing. If you have more money than everyone else, then you purchase more than you physically can produce.

In order to achieve a balance of trade with developing/third world countries, we would have to produce at an economic level that would enable third world wages to mass purchase U.S. goods.

To do that, we would have to lower all production costs to their levels, reducing wages and standard of living along the way.

The inevitability of his impeachment made Nixon resign.

Just like when I sit an employee down, and give him the choice of resigning for the sake of appearances, or being fired, Nixon made the decision to become the first US president to resign the office, instead of being the second to be impeached.

Your original contention was that Ford pardoned Nixon without Nixon being convicted of any crimes. The fact was that the Articles of Impeachment had been drawn, and were working their way through the system.

So, you're right Nixon was not impeached, he avoided impeachment by resigning, and was not punished in any way due to Ford's pardon.

Unlike Nixon, illegal aliens will face a fine for their having broken the law by being here illegally, should they decide to turn themselves in voluntarily.

In other words, while Nixon enjoyed a pardon, illegal aliens participating in Bush's plan, do not.

That depends on how the question is asked.

Most people want people to quit arriving illegally. The problem is with the process of "showing them the door" itself, and the fact that to locate and forcefully remove from the country an amount of people roughly equal to the entire population of Cuba will truly bend the civil rights of the rest of the people in the nation.

The problem with millions of illegal aliens being on our soil began when we discontinued the ability of migrant workers to travel legally across the border to work.

Realizing that if they returned home, they may not be able to return to the US and work again, they opted to remain here illegally.

Let them work here, pay taxes, and go home once they're done working.

Given the choice, most people would choose to go back home.

Bush's plans starts the process of controlling the problem by reducing the number of people we need to deport.

It's not the migrant workers that are the problem.

And just what does "go home once they're done working" accomplish? The sucking sound just gets louder when they take even more money out of our economy.

Let them make a better life for themselves in their own country.

Bush's plan is garbage. Anything that doesn't cut off any federal program money for illegals, deny illegals ANY opportunity to become citizens, institue massive penalties against those employing illegals and beef up the security on our borders is worthless.

A few things to point out:

1) The "fine" is no difference than the "fine" we pay to get a drivers license, business license, etc.

2) If they turn themselves in is the key words. Seeing as they did not follow the legal way to come here, why would they do this? Will they get deported? Isn't that what is supposed to be done now? How about just enforcing the current laws?

3) So now we reduce the penalty for breaking the law? That is part of the problem with America now, instead of punishing law breakers we give them a slap on the wrist.

Correct, build up the border patrols and put DEA agents in the patrols.

Here is where you are in error, this is possible. First, any officer, etc. that comes across an illegal must detain them for immediate deportation. Some places have told officers that they can't, the feds should tell them that they are jepordizing grants, loans, etc. by doing this. Second, set up a national hot line for citizens to let the INS know. We do it for other things, why not this. There are other things that can be done also, without infringing on any rights. It just takes some creative thinking.

You pay a fee to get your license, but pay a fine when caught speeding.

If they apply voluntarily, they will gain the ability to travel acrsoos the border for work purposes, or to live here and work fpor a period of time. Why not?

We change the penalty parameters for crimes all the time, sometimes we increase the penalties, some times we decrease them.

To those here that do not want a repeat here, I have two strong suggestions(and I am voting Bush BTW unless he signs an AW ban)

So if you don't vote for Bush if he signs the AW ban, who are you voting for? Do you think Nader or Kerry will sign the AW ban?

This is the problem. You then have to either stay home or vote for some other 3rd party who may/may not sign the ban either. Either way, it doesn't help your cause.

At least Bush is a pro-gun proponent. And I, like Bush, think there is middle ground on every issue. When you take the middle ground, you get the extreme left and the extreme right pissed off at you.

In the end, Kerry still wins if you stay home or vote 3rd party.
