The students then asked about his partner.

Unless you've read a different account of the incident, it seems pretty clear. Sounds as though this guy was trying to quell the rumor by responding directly to student questions. If he had responded any other way, it would have simply escalated the rumors.

He didn't need to respond at all. He could have said something like:
This is my personal business and I prefer not to discuss it with anyone at my work.
Don't ask; don't tell!
