While we are presently sinking to a new low, at least we are more open and honest about it.

Why is openness and honesty about decline a good thing? Better that degenerates keep their problems in private. Seems to me that the problem is openness. Folks have been homosexual since no later than the early books of the Old Testament. Except in ancient Greece, rarely has there been a suggestion that it is just another lifestyle that deserves full acceptance in society.

Coming out of the closet is an unwanted openness that changes the very ancient compromise that has been reached. Generally, if homosexuals stay in the closet, society doesn't bother them (not always true, but usually).

Hypocrisy is the homage vice pays to virtue. When Rush Limbaugh was secretive about his drug habit, it's because he knew it was wrong. When a conservative politician has a secret affair, its because he knows its wrong. And closeted homosexuality gives the same message. And it's the right message. These behaviors are wrong and folks who engage in them should stay in the closet and let society pretend they are normal.

The clause "or so many opponents of gay marriage seem to believe" refers only to " Lots of people yearn to marry their best friend", not to Godstein himself.

From a strict logical, literal interpretation, of course you are correct and I read it the same way. But this is just Goldstein's sick sense of humor. He just wants conservative readers to get their knickers in a twist.

And do you really think that if Goldstein had ever lusted for a dog, he wouldn't have had sex with it?

"What's next? Marrying a dog? Marrying your cat?"

There's already one documented case of someone marrying a cow.

Do you really think that we can believe him when he says he has not had sex with a dog?
