When no matches were found from 275 locals who signed up at four donation drives
held for her in Xenia, a community of about 25,000,...
I'm gonna' have to remember that statistic the next time I see a registry drive...
I had a friend from college who donated...it is a very big deal.

Thanks for posting this. What a wonderful story. I donate platelets twice a month, but I've never registered as a blood marrow donor. That will be taken care of this week.

I will never forget word of Our Lord Whatever you do for this little once, I surely tell you, you are doing for me" My English is rusty so I apologize.

I would donate blood, but last time I tried, the organizers were kicking out anybody who had been to Europe in the past six years. Anybody know if this is a requirement across the board?

Cool. I started donating platelets back in '89, when it was fairly new, and passed my 50th donation a few years back. I haven't done it since I moved, but now that I've read this, I will.

If I recall correctly, the questions regarding Europe were about spending extensive periods of time in the UK, or having transfusions there in the last five years. I might be forgetting some, but you can call either the Red Cross or other blood banks and ask before going to donate.
Also, before going to the trouble of going down there, I suggest asking in advance how old their doughnuts are. You might want to bring your own.

I donate blood but wonder if I would be up to donating bone marrow. Seems pretty invasive.

It's painful. And. . .so what? Is it not worth going through some pain, inconvenience, and discomfort to save someone's life.

I donate a pint of B- blood 3-4 times a year. Its easy, anonymous and doesn't require a long term committment. Drilling into my hip bone and extracting bone marrow is scary.

I donate blood but wonder if I would be up to donating bone marrow. Seems pretty invasive...While to surgery necessary to actually donate the marrow isn't exactly minor, it isn't catastrophic either. Either way, I'm on the national list, and wouldn't think of removing myself at this point. While I only came up a preliminary match once (with further testing revealing incompatabilities which would have proved dangerous to the recipient), there may well come a time when the decision must be made, and with someone else's life on the line, I would decide as Blair did...

Certainly something to think about. Blood donations are a snap compared to this.

Contrast this story with any number on this site right now about sick bastards that want to blow up women and children because we are "the great Satan".

Wow, this story brings back a lot of memories about my father. This girl is very blessed. Not many people survive graft versus host disease.
