...fired 17 live missiles onto a range over the Arabian Sea...
Can you hear me now, Ahkmed? You rodents in Iran and Syria think you have missile capability. You're about to find out what missile capability really is.

"The theory was to prove that even though the Phoenix has been in the inventory for more than two decades, they are still capable of projecting power and showing that they remain a very viable option in the air-to-air regime, said Lt.j.g. Matt Tallyn of VF-143 "Pukin' Dogs." Ping!!

I bet Putin is somewhat PO'd over this...his boys couldn't get off like what 1 missile during their little war games...

Aboard the submarine 'Archangelsk', in the Barents sea, near Severmorsk on February 17, 2004.
Part of military demonstration outright failed, and after it did not go as planned,
many explanations followed. Does someone look icy cold and upset at the failure?

Wasn't the Phoenix designed as a long-range fleet intercept missile, for use against larger, SLOWER bombers carrying Anti-Ship missiles and cruise missiles?
IIRC, the Phoenix is not particularly capable of handling modern high-performance aircraft, in terms of speed or maneuverability. While it was an outstanding piece of hardware in its day, it's hardly the missile for modern air-to-air engagements. That's probably why they're in such a hurry to deplete the inventory by blasting a dozen at a time at "gliding" drones.

That's not what they told me in AO school.
To: quietolong
So the Phoenix is capable of engaging high performance aircraft of the latest generation? That would be nice to hear, given the outstanding range.

Weapons systems are constantly upgraded.

Bump!
To: ASA Vet
You Bet!
Look at the AIM9 from A-R (think thats the latest)
20 years ago I loaded the last Bullpup on a P-3 and it still used vacuum tubes in it. And now look what theyve done to dumb Mk82s
The AIM54 is up the alphabet too.
To: quietolong
I still have about a thousand vacuum tubes unused and in boxes.
Think it's time to trade them in on a new vet?
