When I read this I immediately thought of Hamburg. What could be more perfect from a Muslim point of view then blow old St. Pauli/Reeperbahn into kingdom come. Then send a video to the news and blame Germany's alliance with the U.S. in Afghanistan AND the red light districts etc...

They obviously have the logistical support in Hamburg and know the city quite well. I'll bet you that they have people working on the docks and some of them are selling their wares on the Fischmarkt.

I've always said one of the worst things that could happen is for Al-Qaeda to try and cause another Texas City style disaster. Detonating a large cargo ship full of either high explosives or just ammonia nitrate would lay waste to any port and surrounding region. The effects would be about the same as a low kiloton nuke going off.

A maritime attack could be as bad or worse than the WTC bombings. The worst industrial accident in US history was the explosion of the SS Grandecamp,click the link for photos and a complete story. In short, the explosion of the ship, carrying ammonium nitrate caused a 50 foot tidal wave, knocked two airplanes out of the sky, capsized other ships, killed the entire fire department, broke windows twenty miles away, was audible fifty miles away, and shook light fixtures in Temple, TX, over two hundred miles away.

As a sea going Radio Communication Officer, I worked on tankers from 1957 to 1981. During that time we mostly docked inside port area!

I know tankers come up river into Phily and up inside some other ocean ports. But more and more, floating buoy-connections are now being used, especially after OPA-90 was passed. This regulation has turned the business of transporting fuel over US waters on its head. Some of it is good environmental practice. Some of it is BS.
I used to bring tankers on the Great Lakes from refineries at Sarnia, Ontario into Duluth-Superior Harbor. These were 50-60,000 bbls of Number 6 fuel, much smaller than the crude oil tankers you sailed on.
