Just voted about a half an hour ago at my polling place in Jackson Co. and they told me I was just the sixth Republican they'd had all day. I hope that's not indicative of the rest of the state...I'd hate to think we're that apathetic.
It surprised me because I thought there was a lot of interest in this Senate race....but apparently no contest at the top of the ballot=no motivation to vote.

It's possible some of the mudslinging is keeping people away from the polls. I read that turnout is low across much of the state.

Well, as I'm sure you know, it matters greatly where your polling place is in Jackson County. Did you happen to vote in a town that has a large university-student population?

You're right, it was Carbondale. But SIX??? Is that typical?? I'm a native Hoosier who just moved to IL this past year so...I admit to being a novice when it comes to IL politics. Is the disparity between Republicans and Democrats here really that great?? The mayor of Carbondale is a Republican.

I agree, six does sound like a pretty slim turnout. The disparity could well be that great in Carbondale, but less so in the rest of the county.
Our polling place typically has 2 Democrat booths to every Republican one. My best guess is that much of the county is close to that ratio. Jackson, Perry and Franklin counties all went to alGore in 2000, and I expect that they will make a similar mistake this fall.

It's not over yet. These results are the urban results. As of now, 87% of Cook County's precincts have been reported, as have 23% of DuPage County and 35% of Lake County. Virtually none of the downstate precincts have been reported yet.

When I went to mine here in south-central Illinois, all three that I saw there at the time (two besides me) were Republicans. One of the voters was talking with the blue-hairs about The Passion. A little anecdotal hope for ya. :^)
