I really can sympathize with what you're saying, much as I do not agree with your ultimate conclusion. I will come out and say it: it's not EASY to stand by our Constitutional principles. I'll agree with you that the Dems are a rogue political party... but, if we are willing to throw our principles out the window in order to stop them, then we are no better than them in the end.

Goodness prevails in the end. That might be hard to believe at times, but if we cannot believe in that, then there is nothing worth believing in. All is not lost if Kerry is elected, just as all was not lost when Carter and Clinton were elected. We are a strong people and will survive. We do not survive, though, if we are willing to give up on that for which we stand, as I have said throughout this thread.

Goodness prevails in the end.

That's not guaranteed. You let the wrong group of people come to power, and the next time you see goodness might be 70 years and 50,000,000 dead later (the CCCP), 200 years later (the Mongol yoke on Russia), or even longer than that (Assyria).

That is true. And how do we know that the ones who take over for this administration will be benign as well? Just because we may trust those in power now doesn't mean they will always be in power...

You prevent such things by having government that answers to the people. CCCP did not answer to the people. Neither did the Mongols.

History shows that the public rallies around the President during times of crisis, as they did after 911. It would be counterproductive for Bush to postpone elections if there was another attack.

So why would the terrorists attack if it would make Bush's re-election more likely? It is interesting to note that the International Institute of Strategic Studies, which advocated the invasion of Iraq, has now said that terrorist recruitment has increased as the result of the Iraq invasion. Bin Laden may reason that an attack that is likely to provoke a forceful US response in the Middle East (invading Iran, for example) would help swell their ranks.

This question comes up constantly. We must hold elections no matter what.

Well, no doubt I'll catch hell for this. OTOH, maybe the thread is so old I'll avoid taking too much flak. :-)

BUT . . . I believe the Left is sooooo intent on destroying the county, and that they are such an imminent threat, patriotic Americans would be fully justified in preventing them from fielding any more candidates, period. Never mind what muslims do or don't do.

That's right, I want the democrap party BANNED. Socialists BANNED. Communists BANNED. And all their pet causes permanently BANNED from further consideration. This after all is what they themselves have done to many causes they despise, both good causes and bad causes, through invention of an insidious device for manipulating public opinion known as political correctness.

They should be exiled, their parties banned, their causes outlawed. If this takes martial law and suspension of a scheduled presidential election, if it takes civil war, so be it. I'll be darned if we should sit idly by and let them slowly destroy us.

Some will scream that this is un-American, but it is no more un-American than the Framers ridding the country of redcoats.

...should the US government cancel or postpone the November election if we are attacked?
No offense, but your trial balloon needs popping with a resounding HELL NO!
America isn't Spain and Americans aren't Spanish Euroweenies.

And a question for you...
Is it possible that the Democrats are actually deranged enough in their desire to regain the WH and have sufficient ties with terrorists organizations to coordinate such an act?
People do strange things to regain power.

You have got to be kidding. The terrorists want Bush reelected? There is no way, none.

If they attack it will be to insure that Kerry wins. Which brings us back to my first point. Which some powerful public spokespersons agree.

This doesn't seem so far out of the mainstream now. Exclusive: Election Day Worries

July 19 issue - American counter-terrorism officials, citing what they call "alarming" intelligence about a possible Qaeda strike inside the United States this are reviewing a proposal that could allow for the postponement of the November presidential election in the event of such an attack, NEWSWEEK has learned.

The prospect that Al Qaeda might seek to disrupt the U.S. election was a major factor behind last week's terror warning by Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge. Ridge and other counterterrorism officials concede they have no intel about any specific plots. But the success of March's Madrid railway bombings in influencing the Spanish elections—as well as intercepted "chatter" among Qaeda operatives—has led analysts to conclude "they want to interfere with the elections," says one official.

As a result, sources tell NEWSWEEK, Ridge's department last week asked the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel to analyze what legal steps would be needed to permit the postponement of the election were an attack to take place. Justice was specifically asked to review a recent letter to Ridge from DeForest B. Soaries Jr., chairman of the newly created U.S. Election Assistance Commission. Soaries noted that, while a primary election in New York on September 11, 2001, was quickly suspended by that state's Board of Elections after the attacks that morning, "the federal government has no agency that has the statutory authority to cancel and reschedule a federal election." Soaries, a Bush appointee who two years ago was an unsuccessful GOP candidate for Congress, wants Ridge to seek emergency legislation from Congress empowering his agency to make such a call. Homeland officials say that as drastic as such proposals sound, they are taking them seriously—along with other possible contingency plans in the event of an election-eve or Election Day attack. "We are reviewing the issue to determine what steps need to be taken to secure the election," says Brian Roehrkasse, a Homeland spokesman.

I knew sooner or later someone would say this. Just didn't realize it would be so early.

And if Clinton were in the White House?

In that case, many here would think we should hold earlier elections to get rid of him.

Should we suspend in case of NFL strike?

This time it is the NHL.
