Maggie, I think it was much more civilized when you were growing up there than it is now!

You are right, dixie.
I have no desire to go down there as it is now.
We used to take Sunday drives in the country to Miami Beach, if you can process auch a thing!
Only a few blocks were highly developed before WWII, with a number of homes on the Biscyne Bay side.
We'd go over the Causeway and right on to the beach - no crowds.

Granny and Babba use to go to Miami as did Grandaddy and Grandmomma. They always took the "Dixie Highway" down. I've got some pictures somewhere of that part of the country between WWI and WWII. They use to stay at the Flamingo (?) Hotel and with friends on the way down.
It's a pain driving down there now, can you imagine what it was like then?

The year that I turned 13 was the year that Isle of Palms started it's downhill trek. I remember stretches of beach with almost white sand. Being able to pick up shells on the beach.
It was like that all up and down the coast - then came the invasion...

Funny - I was navigating the Dixie Highway as a child going up to South Carolina to visit my grandparents and other relatives!
Had to spend the night on the way, the speed limit in the 1940's being 40 mph - flying!
When my mother married Daddy in 1923 in Charleston, he took her back to his home in Florida, near Orlando.
The entire two-lane highway then, dixie, was made of crushed shells, and was quite narrow !!

Sorry, I got sidetracked over at the Dose. Eric will be home soon and ohioWfan is really excited. You can imagine.
Yes, I can't believe how much Fla. changed over the years. When we first drove down to Miami it was a two-lane road through swampland, black loam vegetable fields and citrus groves. Hardly ever saw another car. I felt as if I had entered another world. I guess I had.

I've heard the stories about the Dixie Highway! Granny had a lead foot, lol. She flew in her car up and down that highway!

Since Momma and Daddy moved down there in 1970, I've seen so many changes. Whether we (my son) and I drove or took the train, you could see the growth - astounding and heartbreaking. What once was a beautiful part of the country is now a megalopolis and disheartening. I really dislike traveling through that area.
