One thing I've noticed is that polls tend to move rightward when an issue actually confronts the voters. If "gay marriage" is just some theoretical thing that isn't imminent, some apathetic types will vaguely endorse it. They take the attitude of, "Hey, if two gay guys want to get married, it doesn't affect me."

But once an issue such as "gay marriage" becomes imminent, people pay more attention to it and start thinking through its implications a little more. That invariably moves more people to the right, as even some apathetic types start realizing the effect sanctioning such nonsense would have on children, private organizations, etc.

I agree fully with your comment on judicial tyranny. For an analysis of the thinking of the Massachusetts judiciary, it's worth a re-read of Dennis Prager's excellent piece at:

It doesn't matter, the Queen of Massachusetts, SJC Justice Margaret Marshall, has decreed it and there are not enough citizens with the necessary attributes to do a damn thing about it.

By the way, I should also add that if the issue goes to the voters, the results will be even more conservative than polls indicate. I think polls showed California voters evenly divided on gay marriage in the weeks before they voted on the issue on referendum a couple of years ago, but when the votes were counted, the ban on "gay marriage" passed with over 60% of the vote.

Because of the intimidation factor of political correctness, some people are afraid even to tell anonymous pollsters their actual stance on things like "gay marriage" and affirmative action.
