The big question is whether or not the "billion" figure in the article refers to a British billion (which is one million times one million, and not the American convention of one thousand times one million)...

I have been through several major hurricanes. During the most sever, even the most devastated areas did not lost 1 out of 5 trees. Maybe one out of 50. Thick forested trees actually hold each other up in place. The majority of downed trees were those on the edge of the forested areas, where there was no protection.

UK weather is almost as fun as Texas weather, although it takes them centuries to achieve really interesting reports.
British weather.
Excerpt: "Strange showers - 1984
It rained Dover sole and flounder in east London, possibly due to a tornado"

His body was found in a neighbour's garden over 1 mile away I say it's bogus as well. One mile by a naturally ocurring catapult? Impossible.
If there was that much stored energy in the tree trunk it would have ripped the soffit free from the house.

I went there and all the speed limit signs were in miles per hour. Go figure.
