People can be very uptight about smoking in their homes and this is OK. But some go even further by not letting you wear shoes in their house. People have become so rude , it seems.

Of all lung cancers, 95% of total number are from people that are genetically predisposed to develop lung cancers if they smoke.

LOL, I know... and it will get worse.

It would be rude to have guests over and not allow them to smoke, then again it's your home. You should let them know ahead of time, if their smoking is non-preferable. I have to disagree, a mans home is his castle, if he chooses to have a smokefree home, so be it, we have lots of friends who do not allow smoking in their home, and thats fine with us.

I did say, then again it's your home. That was kind of along the lines that the host has the position of "king of the castle". I totally agree with that, my thought was in response to whomever it was I was responding to.

BTW, thanks Skink for the reminder. I just did that to separate my comments and to use the bold as a different choice. Sorry about offending anyone.

He's pretty much been one all along, my friend. Every now and then, he's right about something. But you know what they say about broken clocks and all.

Smokers have no respect for their bodies and that is sad.

How about alcoholics, over-eaters and yes even fanatic sports people.

Strange that smokers are the only people targeted when speaking of disrespect for ones body.

Everybody knows what smoking does to their bodies, you said in post #28.

Sorry, but everybody knows what they've been TOLD smoking does to their bodies.Don't believe everything you read on any issue, including the smoking issue.

There are many sides to every story and the problem is that the media has taken the side of the militant anti-smokers so that's what we read or hear.

You also said that smokers have no respect for their bodies. Aren't you being a bit condescending???

......smoke in your lungs has and always will be a dangerous thing.

Your sentence needs to be corrected........

....smoke of any type in your lungs has and always will might possibly be a dangerous thing.

I do not bother with the childish game of correcting grammar or spelling.

Ahhhh . . . four days with Free Republic and already so judgmental. I tried ignoring your "holier than thou" proclomations but you grow incrementally more pious with each post.

Do you drive? How many gas-guzzling, carbon dioxide-spewing vehicles does your family own? Do you go out in the sun without sunscreen? Do you eat red meat? Do you eat at McDonald's? Do you . . .

The no-no list is endless, roslyn. If one is of age, smoking tobacco is a legal act. Society can limit where adults can smoke BUT adults have the right to smoke if they wish . . . and your piety will convince no one to do otherwise.

Would I smoke in a non-smoker's house? No. Would I smoke in MY house if I invited over some non-smokers for dinner? No. I don't like cigarette smoke either. I smoke only outside . . . BUT THAT'S MY CHOICE!! I call it being considerate.

Good manners can't be legislated.

And trust me . . . you're not nearly as omniscient as you appear to think you are. Being judgmental doesn't play well on Free Republic. Debating is encouraged . . . preaching should be left for the pulpit.

Lastly, I want to apologize for being judgmental toward you . . . perhaps you haven't mastered the tricky art of debating without alienating those you wish to persuade . . . but your current tactic isn't working.

I smoke because I want to . . . because I like to. It's as simple as that. I would never purposefully let my habit become a nuisance or bother to anyone else . . . and I certainly wouldn't want to affect anyone else's health -- just as I don't talk loud at the movies, interrupt anyone else when they're speaking, or forget to say Sir or Ma'am when appropriate.

Who regulates drugs? I guess the FDA. Take your beef up with them.

You know people who were ruined because of tobacco use . . . fine. So do I? And I prayed for them . . . but they were adults who made the conscious decision to smoke. Just as rock climbers know scaling Mt. Everest can be hazardous to your health should you take a tumble.

Do you know anyone who was incapacitated by a car crash? Do we now outlaw vehicles?

Do you know anyone who has asthma? Do we now order the flowers to stop pollenating? The dust to stop settling? The wind to stop blowing? Do we sue the government to make them build us an asthma-proof environment?

Do you know anyone with heart problems? So . . . what do we do about that? Do we now outlaw fatty foods and make everyone who is susceptible to a heart disease weigh-in weekly and walk five miles a day while pumping ten pound weights in both hands?

Again, I say we can't legislate human behavior. We can motivate. We can educate. We can even get on our hands and knees. But an adult has NO right to dictate to another adult how they handle legal affairs or activities.

Should marijuana be legal? To be blunt . . . I don't have an opinion about that. I used to. I used to be an anti-drug crusader . . . and I probably still lean that way . . . but I have a dear friend with a crippling, chronic disease and she's tried every "pain killer" known to the legal world AND she swears marijuana is the only substance that helps her cope. She's 53, hardly a druggie, and I'd trust her with my life . . . so her experience has made me take a step back and reconsider.

So, to me, marijuana isn't a black and white issue. But even if it was I wouldn't "inflict" my opinion and/or biases on someone else. THAT is the problem I had with your posts . . . not your argument. At least with marijuana there's a clear dividing line . . . society says it's illegal so any adult who decides to use it anyway does so at their own risk. But if someone like my friend used it, I would be more understanding now.

And if you and I were on opposing sides of the marijuana issue, I would simply tell you the story of my friend without questioning your integrity, intelligence, or motives.

Re-read your posts. See if you don't think they're judgmental. I don't have a beef with your anti-smoking or anti-alcohol stands. I have a beef with how you "label" other adults who disagree with your views.

You don't have to go there. Your question about who legislates drugs is a good one. You didn't make one judgmental statement in this post . . . and that's the only reason I've responded to it in such detail. You can be a valued FReeper . . . just don't try to "impose" your beliefs on others by being judgmental and you'll win more debates than you lose.
