A repost from the other day.
THE COST OF 9/11
Excerpt from a Department of Defense news briefing by
Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, February 13 2004
http://www.defenselink.mil/transcripts/2004/tr20040213-0445.html "... Some talk today about the cost of defending freedom, but the cost of that single day of destruction in September 2001 was astounding.
'The Wall Street Journal' published an estimate last year. According to the Journal, the costs to our country included:
$7.8 billion in lost income for the families of the more than 3,000 victims - money that would have gone to pay for braces and summer camps, schools and colleges.
$21 billion to New York City for direct damage costs.
$4 billion for the victims fund.
$700 million to repair the Pentagon.
$6.4 billion in reduced or lost wages and salaries for workers in New York industries.
1.3 million net jobs lost nationwide, and $150 billion in reduced GDP.
Some $50 billion in costs to the insurance industry.
Approximately $11 billion in lost business to the airline industry, and the bankruptcy of two airlines, even after a $15 billion federal bailout.
Some $38 billion in costs for new border security, protection against biological threats, and emergency preparedness.
Roughly $1.3 billion in costs to state governments for homeland security, and more than $33 billion in spending by the private sector for new protective services.
Even assuming for some overlap, the 9/11 attack alone cost the American people many hundreds of billions of dollars and that is not counting the price paid in lives and the suffering of the families of those lost. All of this was caused by four airplanes. Picture the damage terrorists could inflict with a chemical, biological, nuclear or a radiation weapon.
So the stakes are high and terrorism will not simply go away. It has to be defeated."

Interesting idea over here, from someone running for office:
Proposal: No WIre Transfers FROM Illegal Aliens to Foreign Countries
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1080709/posts "(LOS ANGELES) Republican U.S. Senate Candidate Howard Kaloogian['s] ... proposal will remove a current incentive for illegal immigration in the U.S. Millions of illegal immigrants who have entered this country illegally regularly wire money to friends, family members and associates in their countries of origin.
"[The legislation would] require any individual who electronically transmits money to a foreign country to be in the United States legally. Before funds can be transferred to another country, the sender must establish their identity with proper identification ... .
"Last year more than $30 billion was sent from immigrants in the United States many of them here illegally to Mexico and Latin America alone.
"One of the benefits of this new policy will be to establish leverage with leaders, such as Mexicos Vincente Fox, who have sent a wink and a nod to their citizens to enter the United States illegally, collect wages that are up to ten times as high as those paid in Mexico, and then send these funds back to Mexico."
Makes sense to me.

I thought the President looked tired today. He is under the most ruthless assault by the media. Our Dear Lord, please grant the President strength and encouragement, wisdom and clarity of judgment.
I am so glad that he has Laura!

Now I'm watching Scott McClellan do the daily press briefing on CSPAN. The press is horrible, but does anyone else think that even though McClellan tries very hard, he just doesn't represent the President as well as is needed?

I thought the President looked tired today. He is under the most ruthless assault On the Dose a couple days ago, in the photos of him sitting with some business folks, I thought the same thing -- it wasn't really apparent in the pictures or his joviality, but it was more than I was seeing his deep inner need for constant prayers. I was seeing how much God is holding him up and that he gets a lot wearier than we know. People are praying for him continually via prayer chains / sign-up times, and on their own. I do not know how any US President can manage without that. When I look back at LBJunk and some of the others, and evaluate their decisions, I see even more the fruit of all of these prayers now.
