The same folks who are up in arms about Bush missing a few meetings in the National Guard were (and are) dead silent about Clinton ditching the Vietnam war and military service altogether to go smoke bud with his fellow Vietcong sympathizers at Oxford.

"President Bush's National Guard Years"

And this is important why? The Whitehouse is only throwing fuel to the fire. This is a non-issue. He's "Commander in Chief" now, for goodness sake!

I am concerned with the HERE and NOW and NOT with the THEN and THERE.

Bingo.

I lived through Vietnam. One of my high school beaus was killed in Nam. My sister's fiance was killed in Nam. A shirttail relative was killed in Nam. Two of my sister's husbands suddenly developed flat feet. One of my cousins was in the Guard. Two of my cousins served in Nam. It was a very difficult time for the country. But it's something I do not want to relive. It's the past. It's history. Why this picayune stuff is being dredged up now is beyond me. In November, the question isn't going to be about what someone was doing in the early 70's, but what are you going to do for the country now.

I wonder if the New York Times will next investigate Dick Gephardt's career in the Missouri Air National Guard (1965-71)?

What is funny about all this is that most people were, up until a few days ago, unaware of Bush's military service. The picture of him in the cockpit will continue to help his re-election bid...

I sevred during Vietnam and completed 28 total years of service and retired from the reserve as a Navy Captain (now you understand my call sign. You know maybe someone ought to chart John Kerry's service. Every adult male (at that time) 18 years and over had a statute required 6 year military obligation. If you look close, the Navy let John Kerry out early and he served no time in the reserve. Mainly because of the unpopularity of the war, many people who had served 2 years (with Vietnam) or a full 4 years were not required to serve out their entire time (6) in a drilling status. John Kerry only served about 4 years from the articles I've read and he only had about 5 months in country when he sought a reassignment because of his 3 wounds. Ask the NYT to plot that all out!

LOL! Not a chance--even if he was still a candidate.

they mention he did civilan work, isn't that what people in the guard do? they work during the week and perform service in the guard on the weekend and during other assigned times. they don't even understand the guard.
