Actually, yes, they can and do. I was one of those "wayoutnowhere" kids. Those visits to museums took place on our vacations. I preferred the Smithsonian to any of the others--FAR more interesting.

I have an idea, cynic. Why don't we take all elementary school librarians.......the people who love children enough to want them to be able to read.........line them up against a wall and shoot them?

btw, that is entirely sarcastic, I am opposed to this spending, and I think Laura Bush is one of the most beautiful women (inside and out) that I have ever seen.......

Write to your Congressmen and Senators if you don't want this money spent. Laura is not spending it. (For the civics challenged on this thread)

Apparently the people who SHOULD be funding the arts for kids who don't have access to it are NOT......therefore, if it is to be done, government needs to do it.

It is a MOST unfortunate situation, IMO........

Want Shakespeare? Fine - go to the library. Want to see the works of Robert Mappelthorpe? Fine - go to any bathhouse. Want to see fine art? Super - go to a museum. Don't live near a museum? Tough.

Not so TOUGH actually since some museums are now exhibiting their collections on the internet.

Most countries consider art to be an important part of their history and culture. And a source of national pride. We seem to be one of the few countries who doesn't care.

Since when does the United States look to the example of other countries to set its policy? If we looked to what "most countries" do, Saddam Hussein might very likely still be in power. For that matter, we'd still be sending money to our "sovereign".

The United States didn't become the world's lone superpower by accident. OUR policies work far better than those in "most countries".
