Its an emotional minefield for students, said Jefferson first grade teacher Marguerite Talley-Hughes, who along with parents and fellow teachers initiated the effort last spring to rename the school so it wouldnt bear the mark of a slaveholder.
_____
Perhaps they should also shed the benefits and rights as a citizen of the US. After all they wouldn't want the "mark" of a nation created by slaveholders on them now would they.

Tell the parents the school was named after the The Jeffersons, and the whole controversy will disappear in a second.

Does everyone in the Bay area have 3 names?
To: Humidston
I'm sure Castro is on the short list of potential names.
I say name it "Margaret Sanger Elementary". Just tell 'em she was the founder of Planned Parenthood. They won't bother to do any checking.

Hokey-Pokey Elmo Academy
The BARNEY School
Teletubbies Tech
Nintendo Elementary
But more Likely: The People's Republik of Berkeley Re-education Center #6 (Has kind of a feel-goody ring to it...no?)

Am I the only one who sees the irony in the fact that the paper is called the "Daily Planet"?
To: againstallhope
Well another generation of "lost souls" are being raised in Berkeley. I am sure these moronic parents are probably spending hours trying to persuade a bunch of elementary school kids to vote to change the name. Why are they letting the kids vote, actually they probably have more sense than the adults.

This idiocy is making me crazy!

CalKat - I see I was not wrong about you.
No conservative would compare the renaming of a building in Reagan's honor to Castro!
Did Reagan kill people and starve his people? Did people die trying to leave this country to go live in Cuba.
You are the same freeper who last month suggested it was a good thing the Russians illegally supplied Iraqis with banned military equipment because it leveled the playing between their soldiers and ours and otherwise it would have been a bloodbath.
I've heard some outrageous things on FR but never before have I heard a conservative compare Reagan to Castro or think it was a good thing that our soldiers were possibly placed in harm's way because someone gave the enemy UN banned equipment.

You have a serious problem with reading comprehension. You manage to twist everything I say. You remind me of a stalker -- you're everywhere that I am.
Where did I compare Ronald Reagan to Castro? Did you read my post, or just see my name and have a knee jerk reaction?
The post I replied to said renaming buildings was something Castro would do. Did you bother to read the post I replied to? Why do you even bother with my posts, since you can't understand them?

There isn't a conservative alive who would think that renaming a building after Reagan was akin to Castro.

Dear Peach, I do believe we have a disrupter in our midst.
Anyone who makes snide cracks about Ronaldus Magnus is highly suspect in my book.

Definitely. Do an inforum of her other posts.
She has in the past thought it was good the Russians sold UN banned military equipment to the Iraqis. She postulated this because it was only "fair" and otherwise would be a bloodbath.
She's generally far more subtle than that.
Today she misquoted Powell. It's always subtle so you can't hit abuse, but she's a troll.

We really need to find a systemic roach bait around here! Seems like every time we nail one, two more pop out of the woodwork!
Isn't it amazing that they find it necessary to come to FR when they have their own dysfunctional forum where they can play safely with other freaks like them?
And I agree... s/he is dancing righhht on the edge. We'll watch and swat when necessary! ;-)

Are we following in the footsteps of Comrade Castro when we re-name places to honor Ronald Reagan?
NO. Only when we name them after commie following, socialist dictators or their followers....and take away the previous names of the Founders of this country....at least that's MY take on it.

To: Humidston
Gee, we're following in the footsteps of Comrade Castro - renaming everything. He did the same when he took over Cuba. America or Amerika? They'll probably want "Marxia" or "Marxia-Leninia", or maybe "Deathtowhitepeoplia".
The name won't matter, because all the rest of us will be caught in a PC wood chipper.
