I grew up in the 1950s Detroit, and knew every make and model. It was great fun in Havana, spotting all the old cars: "hey, there's a 53 Merc!" Official visitors of my age were amazed on the road in from Jose Marti airport. The mechanics are just amazing. They are some serious cannibalizers; they take old Lada (Russian Car) parts and beat them into the form where they replace worn-out parts on that 58 Chevy. The Chief of Mission (Ambassador) was an old car buff; he loved restoring them. He got a line on a 58 Chevy and got into a fight with the Foreign Ministry over whether or not he would be able to export the car at the end of his tour. I left before the issue was resolved.

Awesome story - the whole island is a working car museum - in many ways much better than some big room where all the cars are just sitting there with their hoods open!
