I've rethought Fox's sentiments towards the USA, and the "amnesty plan" by extension; I've concluded I was wrong. I support the idea of retaking Mexico along the boundaries of conquest after the Mexican-American War of the mid-1840's. Imagine the wealth and greatness the poor Mexicans will receive. imagine the immense storehouse of minerals and oil the USA will annex.

There is a downside: TJ and all the other Mexican tourist towns will be more expensive. But imagine the savings of narrowing our border to just Guatamala and Hondurus.

Good points. Under the doctrine of corporatism, posing as conservative, we import cheap labor rather than pay higher wages which would only marginally increase consumer costs or, as an alternative, cause inventiveness and technology improvements that would eliminate the need for the lower cost labor. As a result we suppress rather than encourage growth.

I agree with a lot of what this article says, but this statement describes a highly unlikely situation and is a transparent play on emotion. There are enough real reasons why the amnesty program is bad that we don't need stupid arguments muddling the debate.
There are probably some benefits to the amnesty program though, one of them being the encouragement of higher education by destroying the market for high-school-only education.

Another post on how this is about tech workers. The writing's on the wall for H1b and L1 as the American public sees it for what it is. So you have to usher in a new jobs bill that will keep the H1bs here -- and probably even offer less "protection" than the requirement that they tried to hire an American but they couldn't.

They're probably already unemployed & fighting for a job with an illegal. The job they are fighting over probably pays about $4.00/hr, with no benefits, no overtime, and no future.

Yes, the author could have helped his argument via any less nonsensical example.

But all in all, a good commentary. Bush is a well-meaning fool at best or the vilest sort of calculating politician at worst.

I don't think Bush is a fool. He governed Texas, he knows full-well the consequences of his proposed border policies.

The crux of the problem is that there are jobs for which employers do not pay enough. So of course, in this one area of the economy, the law of supply and demand isn't good enough, so we'll reward lawbreakers on BOTH sides of the employmnet equation.
