Bar owner voluntarily tried going smoke free for six months. Didn't do too well.

Bar owner voluntarily tried going smoke free for six months. Didn't do too well. And actually, being the only non-smoking bar in the area would give him a competitive advantage as compared with being one of several, if people who who objected to smoke made up any significant portion of his potential clientelle.

But it is the sworn duty of elected officials to protect the health and welfare of the citizenry, so any delay in action would be unwise.Ummm. No, actually.. The elected officials just need to stay out of the way of productive humans.

This is silly. Why can't the taxpayers pay him to keep it smoke free, thereby supporting our liberal agenda?(/lib speak)

We simply didnt receive the support in numbers we had hoped for from non-smokers
Of course not you knucklehead! The overwhelming majority of the people that USED TO go to your place either smoked or didn't care about smoking! Your attempt to cater to the outspoken minority who offer up all kinds of hollow promises if only you will honor their biased requests is a lesson in socialist economics!

I don't smoke, but I really have a problem with smoking bans. If I don't want to be around it, I just go other places.
To: beaureguard
This only goes to prove that government doesn't want you to have a decision as to what you can shove down your throat but they would love to have permission to shove anything up your......oh, you know what I mean.

"I don't smoke, but I really have a problem with smoking bans. If I don't want to be around it, I just go other places."
IMHO, yours is the exactly proper response. In NY, the smoking ban has caused many, many bars to crash and burn. I imagine the same is true in Kalifornia. I live in FL, and while I don't smoke, I don't agree with the totalitarian thinking of the smoking Nazis. I don't mind a little smoke, but, like you, if it's a lot, I'll have to weigh how much I like the place vs. alternatives. Better that I can CHOOSE than a lot of others CANNOT choose.

You two guys sound like reasonable non-smokers. Good to hear for a change instead of the, "I'm really conservative, but all restaurants and bars should be forced to do business my way" crowd these threads attract.

We simply didnt receive the support in numbers we had hoped for from non-smokers. On the other hand, about 60 percent of our (patrons) are smokers, and they didnt mind going outside when it was warm, but once it got cold they minded, and our business went in the tank.
Ask any restaurant or bar owner and they'll tell you they are lucky if they can survive. Many haven't.

But it is the sworn duty of elected officials to protect the health and welfare of the citizenry, so any delay in action would be unwise. Also any delay in action to remove french fries from the menu would be unwise. I guess fries are not politically incorrect enough for her.

Bump from another non-smoker in favor of freedom for businessmen.
To: SupplySider
Non-smokers are a different breed from anti-smokers, IMO.
When one starts drilling down through the fog they try to cast, it usually turns out they are anti a lot more than tobacco.
From my observations, anyway.

We simply didnt receive the support in numbers we had hoped for from non-smokers.He expected to draw every drinking non-smoker in the area and when the anti-smoking zealots didn't show he realized that he could stick with the non-smoking zealot crowd and go out of business or go back to business as normal.

Thanks. The whole issue is, IMO, being driven by control freaks, most of whom have never tried to run a small business and most of whom have certainly never been in a sawdust and blood-on-the-floor down and dirty gin mill.
You know, the fun places.
I always wonder if the smoking gnatzies check up on biker bars, like PETA never throws animal blood on leather wearing, tattooed bikers.
