Please ADD me to your "square hole" mars pic update ping list.

I'd like to find out what comes of this.

Keep me on your ping list please!

It does kind of look like there is a hole in the middle of that rock, but it could just be the way the light hits it, too. I don't know. It's really interesting whatever it is.

They look like squashed bushes. When I was growing up we had this round shrub, bush thing in our front yard. Everytime we would get a heavy rain it would kind of flatten out in the middle until it dried out again. When it was flattened out it looked exactly like those things in the pictures.

You are right, I wish they would bring back some pictures of those things close up, too.

At first counting, I had 14 "ooo"s and 25 "who"s as in "ooo, who..." before the song fades. There are some "ooo, who, who"s that make up for the larger number of "who"s, but I think the second "who" is the higher pitched Mick Jagger "who" you are referring to. So, I guess there really are 14 "ooo"s and 14 "who"s and 11 Mick Jagger "who"s. Of course I'll have to count again next time I hear it just to be sure. Unless I happen to hear Miss You first then that will really throw a wrench into the works. That's alot of "oooh"s and even more "aaah"s at the end...

I hope that helps...

Indeed, Mars is turning out to be a much more interesting place than once thought I suspect. Only ideas I have for the the features in this image are maybe some type of freeze upheaval similar to what forms the mounds in the Arctic. Some of those are around 30 feet in height. In the polar regions of Mars, one would think that CO2 or some other volatile instead of water would be the material.

We should drop at least a dozen of these rovers on the the next trip! Any dropped in the polar regions will need some type of nuclear or fuel cell energy source.

What looks like a piece of pipe protruding from the surface. Upon enlargement, it also appears to have a square hole. It's from the very first pan cam image.

It's Algores rock. He knew that since he couldn't plant a tree on Mars, he decided to put a rock there instead. And he drilled that hole in it.......

Yeah, the people at the JPL are making this whole thing up. And they are stupid enough to leave pipes sticking up and what not. AND they dont know how to photoshop something. Yeah, thats the ticket.

I only took three geology courses from fossil fred, but I gotta tell ya; these rocks look like regular old rocks that have not been subjected to water and weather erosion. Without the water beating them around, they would stay sharply edged and would retain the same funky edges that were on them when they were ejected/exploded from their original state.

No mystery there....

One of the first selected landings sites for MER A in the Vallis Marineris, the 2500 mile long canyon on Mars. The reason this was not chosen as the final landing site was because model simulations showed possible wind gusts of 100MPH+ and the landers retro-rockets could only correct for maximum wind gusts of 60MPH.

Granted, Gusev crater is no Vallis Marineris, but certain locations on Mars are capable of Hurricane force winds, even though, like you said, the atmospheric pressure on Mars is only 1% of Earth.

>>>...We don't need the rover getting caught in a bed of mud/ water covered in sand.

The temperature there is much too cold to have a bed of mud.

Way below zero.

WOW! I have never seen that photo before. Are there any more like it?

I always wondered why they didn't land near the poles. It seems like that would be the place to find life on Mars, if it existed. I was so disapointed when the Mars Polar lander crashed.

Maybe it's not rock but rather petrified wood or an old bone :-)

Funny you should say that. The night after I watched Spirit land on Mars via NASA TV, I had a dream that the first photo returned showed a stand fossilized trees.
