My heart bleeds for her, she is lucky she wasn't protesting against the Palestinians or any other Islamic group. The last I've heard a "Canadian photographer was arrested in late June while taking photographs for the London-based Camera Press outside of a prison in Tehran."

Berkeley woman released from Israeli jail

A Bay Area peace activist, jailed in Israel after a demonstration in the West Bank, was released Thursday evening by the authorities after posting bail.

Kate Raphael, 44, of Berkeley, has until Jan. 17 to appeal the deportation order she faces. A member of several international human rights groups, Raphael was arrested after participating in a non-violent protest in Budrus.

Raphael told the Mercury News she is fighting her deportation so that she can travel legally between the United States and the Middle East to continue her work.

``I hope that my legal case will help break down the Israeli policy of excluding people who are trying to document human-rights abuses,'' she said.
