"I smell science looking for more excuses to bang alarm bells and beg for government funds."

And in the meantime, an area 20 miles long by 7 miles wide (the Norris Geyser area) of Yellowstone National Park has been closed off.

Reason is unclear. Could have to do with 200'F ground temperatures.

Subsonic. For now...

lol It'll be a shame when the remnants of Old Faithful end up flung to Canada.

Well, we've already experienced cruption. That would have been 1992-2000, Clinton White House.

That's why I'm emphasing the need for caution, and precaution.

How many "smaller" blows happened before the big one?

Is it 600,000.0000?

No.

So is it 4-40-400-4000-40000 years?

For geologic events..... That IS exact!!!!!

We don't know. Exactly. We only know approximately.

The Kurile Island eruptions aren't a real serious ..... to him.

The prevailing winds will blow it OUR way, though with a lot of simple deposits in the bottom of the Paciifc. Much more to Japan, the Koreas, Aslaka, Canada.

Not a problem for almost all points east of thos islands, and there ain't a lot of Russians living nearby!

Sorry. Bad analogy there.

Clinton's blows were an example of be coming o'er MissFaithfull (MissFaceful?) not of c'rruption of Old Faithful.

bd476 quips:   "A Kiss the Ground We Live in California Bump."

LOL, you actually think you'd be safe from a super volcano by living just a few states away? Don't you realize that the distance between Yellowstone and even the farthest point in California is only 900 miles? And with an estimated 100% kill radius of 600 miles, what percent do you think might survive at 900 miles, maybe 50%? And after one year, what, maybe 1%?

The best idea yet for warning signs at the geysers and pools:

Bathing Prohibited.

Anyone caught bathing will get into HOT WATER.

Quite true. Takes quite a long time for any benefits to show though and by then the myriad corpses produced by the ensuing starvation are doing much more for the biosphere then the ash.

I don't think starvation is going to be as major a threat as you think.

This is not 10,000 years ago, we have winter clothing and heating. Also, we have other ways of getting food, besides crops and cattle from our own country. We may have to do some major fishing in the deep oceans until the sun shines again, in a year or two. But most of us will not die.

On other note, when this does happen, the United States as a whole may learn a hard lesson in who are friends and allies in the rest of the world really are.

The present calendar ends in the year 2012.

December 23, 2012. Some scholars read it December 24, 2012. It doesn't matter, only God knows when the world will end and other than recurring astrological phenomenon (i.e. comets, eclipses, etc.) the Mayans were no more intellgent than anyone else.

In all our reading on the subject of Yellowstone it would help to know more about SILICOSIS! Breathing Ash or living in certain parts of the S.W. United States where the Dust & Sand Blows will give you a new appreciation of what we will be dealing with if this thing Blows its Lid off! Silicon Poisoning by ash fall is nothing to sneeze at or give the soft sell about. By the way how are you fixed up on Standard Coffee filters or Dust Masks. Coffee Filters are much cheaper than mfg'd dust masks!
