I looked into Trex--and know someone who built a deck a few years back of it--it's doing fine. He loves not having to maintain it, at least the part of his deck that is made of it.

Trouble is, the stuff makes a good walking surface and may be a good surface treatment, but has little intrinsic strength. You have to use the same wood beams and posts to hold them up.

Trex could be useful in combination with traditional materials, but cannot replace them.

I thought there was supposed to be a replacement on hand when this stuff was forced off the market! Watch for prices to go up as the last supply is stockpiled by do-it-yourselfers.

My house has toilets that don't work properly, thanks to the wrongheadedness of enviros. Now I can't build a deck?
