"..100 years ago popular opinion was against Italian and Irish immigration."

They were all legal immigrants, not illegals - a huge difference. There is no comparison between legals & illegals - why can't you see that?

's not about rewarding them for breaking the law. it's a recognition that the law itself is inherently unjust. remember that until WW1 free immigration was the norm, except of course for Chinese immigrants (one of the early examples of racism in american immigration policy).

By your standards then I suspect that you also see private property rights as also inherently unjust.

Free immigration has never been the norm in the US. Immigration numbers have varied over time but there has always been a regulatory framework and never before in the history of the US has illegal immigration eclipsed regulated immigration.

Get your facts straight and then return to the fray.

"everyone has a right to the American Dream."

Let them dream it in their own country. The American Dream
will be a distant memory if we continue to support every
person straggling across the border with their hand out.
Look at the number of hospitals in the southwest going
bankrupt from treating non-paying illegals. Give them medical, give them education, give, give, give. Soon it will all be gone and we get not so much as a thank-you. All we get are demands for more and more 'rights'. Sure, make them citizens. Then they become union members and tax payers. Where's the cheap labor now? The only reason it's cheap now is because they don't pay taxes. Heck, I could work for a LOT less if I didn't have to pay income tax, health care, etc, etc. If I thought this was just about cheap lettuce I'd never eat another salad again! (pardon the rant.)

why was it OK to take in unlimited quantities of Irish and Italians 100 years ago, but heavily restrict Mexicans today. After all, most Irish immigrants back then were poorer and more illiterate than a lot of the mexicans. what is your rationale and the moral justification? just because it's the law don't make it the right thing to do. remember, slavery was legal once too.

Once again you are speaking without the facts. Our immigration policies have, until the late 20th century, been regulated. European immigrants had to wait their turn in the 1880s and 1890s just as Americans do today.

that's cause there was no welfare back then to reply upon in the first place! so why is everyone here obsessing about immigration when they should be dismantling the welfare state instead?

You continually refuse to recognize that the obsession is with the regulation of immigration, not immigration.

If you'd like to discuss the welfare state I,m sure you can find an appropriate thread but this thread is about the effect of unregulated immigration upon our society.

you really believe that?

You don't?

The facts are messy aren't they.

I don't believe you. if this was about welfare you'd be dismantling the welfare state instead of black-sheeping immigrants. this is about keeping "wetbacks" OUT. pure and simple.

Now, now. Your cultural prejudice is showing.

I'm most definitely not a troll.

You're correct.

Your just an everyday, plain vanilla, cultural bigot.

If you don't mind, I think I will have to remember and restate this remark on some occassions.

Please do. I was irritated to see the "you disagree with me so you're a racist" non-argument on FR, where I expect a higher level of discourse.

precisely because they're "illegals" that they won't assimilate. make them into citizens and they'll be stars-and-stripes Americans in a generation.

Again you are too busy judging to listen.

It's not the nature of the entry that's causing the problem. We've always had illegal immigration in small numbers along our land boarders.

It's the volume that is the problem. The volume that prevents assimilation and victimizes both the immigrant and the society.

I'm a dual citizen and eligible for a third passport in a certain european country. so all of a sudden I'm a 'bad' American?

No but your loyalty is certainly suspect when you swear allegiance to more than one country. That's why the US has never granted it's citizens dual citizenship.

I guess you'd prefer me being a 'pure' American. reminds me of another country that used to be obsessed with purity some 60 years ago.

Oops. You need to tuck your bigotry beneath your skirt again.

And you will be welcomed if.... you bring the facts and leave your bigotry behind.

no chief, it's your lazy thinking that's showing instead. re-read my post and the one I was answering and try to understand what I really meant.

The reason for my undivided attention is the distinct appearance that you are a cultural bigot who hasn't done much homework with regard to US immigration policies.

Your method appears to be to label your opponent or allude to his/her challenge as a "racist" whenever facts get in the way of your presentation.

The forum regularly receives such visitors and has never tolerated then lightly. As I said previously, you're welcome here if you debate the facts and leave your prejudices behind.

Wrong again bucko. The prejudice is against illegal aliens, not a particular cultural group

Okay lets make it legal for all Mexicans that want to come to the US. They are not illegal any more, do you still have a problem? Thought so.

Where will we go to hunt, fish, or even grow food?

Maybe to Mexico? Maybe the Mexico City area which is about as much as an urban nightmare as you could ever hope to find ---- but it's all moving over here ---- if we think urban sprawl is bad --- it's going to be far worse after all the rest arrive from over there, all the Brazilians, Haitians, and anyone else whose countries aren't working out.
