He might have commuted the death sentences because he was bribed and/or blackmailed; he identified with those on death row; and, there being a good chance he would be heading to prison, he wanted to make sure there would be guys who would owe him.

Exactly- George Ryan would horse trade with anyone if it furthered his ambitions/goals. The store and everything in it, was for sale. Power/party over principle... This philosophy is akin to a corrosive or a terminal disease eating away at the heart and soul of the Il. GOP. Systemic...
The a$$ whooping in the previous general election was a much needed and long overdue treatment for the errant Il. GOP (think catharsis). It remains to be seen if those in power got the message. I suspect it is business as usual. The Republican wing of the Il. GOP has their work cut out for them in the next election. A revolt is in order. However, those in power will not go quietly into that good night.

I intend to celebrate his indictment, his conviction, and his incarceration in my hometown, a noted RINO stronghold, in a demonstrative way.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Lord Acton
The bum George Ryan and the RINO wing of the Il. GOP epitomizes this axiom.

The Illinois GOP, more so than most other states, has a far more powerful and prevalent RINO faction, that is deeply entrenched within the core of the party. Power/party over principle... The role model for this systemic, imbedded marvel is none other than the Cook County Democrat machine. We, the GOP, (speaking collectively) have got a very bad case of it.

I say we bring back the death penalty in IL, and put George Ryan on death row.Funny you should mention that.
This "Licenses for Bribes" story came to light originally over the deaths of 6 children named Willis. The truck driver found to be responsible in the case bought his license while Ryan was Secretary of State.
Is it impossible to believe that those children would be alive had not Ryan been Sec of State?
What an interesting idea to ponder.

Wasn't Ryan implicated in the License for Bribe scandal? And didn't that scandal come to light after the horrific deaths of 6 children in a fiery van crash (parents survived) with a truck driver who got his license thru Ryan's corruption?
Am I remembering correctly?

You just answered my question in post #30. That was one of the first scandals to hit George Ryan I think. Pity those poor parents. They were ministers I believe I recall. They were calling on their faith to see them through....6 kids dead.

They were ministers I believe I recall.I read, within the last year or so, that just before he left office Ryan was approached by the father of the kids.
The father said (paraphrasing), "I just want you to know that my wife and I forgive you for what you did."
Ryan at that moment realized who the guy was, and went completely nuts, practically had to be restrained.
He knows.
