"Next question: will the *slat armor* cage now surrounding the Stryker's lower body work provide a sufficient standoff distance to prevent damage from PG-7 grenade shaped charge warheads, or will a dual-charge PG-7VR round with a half-meter penetration ability in solid steel be used against a Stryker...or just a shot from above on the unprotected top. The Iraqis have several options to try; which will be first..."

Let's hope that after Saddam's capture will dry up the money that has been paying for the attacks. I just hope our soldiers get home safe Stryker debate set aside for today.

If the vehicles don't meet your satisfaction, don't serve in the armed forces.
Too late, I already did . How about you, idjit?

Ha...that is what I get for trying to respond in a hurry as I was leaving for Church services. I mentioned the four out of 5 brigades that were light and going to medium. We did in fact, as you correctly point out, switch one other Brigade, with those 2 tank battalions, to a Stryker Brigade. The point is still that we were switching 4 out of the 5 from light to medium, and us armor folks had to bite the bullit on one heavy brigade as part of the payoff.

It will be interesting. The latest I hear is a force composed of all three types of units, at least for the next 20 years. Many heavy brigades with M1s and M2/M3s, 6 medium brigades with Strykers, and many light brigades.

If, and when, technology does let us develop a lethal light weight tank, we will start to switch some of our heavy units to make more mediums, but I really do not see that happeing for many, many years. The technology just is not there yet...regardless of whether GEN Shinseki (ret) wanted to start building the FCS by 2008 or not. I am thinking you could add 4-8 years onto that date for when the FCS starts to come on line and still be save.

Best of all, I am certain we will have the M1s an M2/M3s for 20 more years. I think both you and I will be happy if that is the case!

I think, on the whole, I'd rather be in a tank.

Can't argue with that! I am in deed an old tread head, and proud of it!

Sometimes the fuse was too fast or too short and the sapper was caught by his own device.

Hoisted by his own petard?

When our guys are on the road, they should be filling the airwaves on all the doorbell opening frequencies to set off these bombs prematurely...

I hope the Int guys were actually smart enough to realize that wireless doorbells & garage openers are pretty easy to spoof...

Does the Stryker not have a halon fire supression system?

I'm glad the soldiers survived the blast, that is supposed to be what the stryker is for.
