>>There is no reason for any politician's face to be on any American fiat coin. Lady Liberty was on our obverse for years, and still is on the only remaining real American money (bullion coins).
But the political parties being what they are, they _want_ to put a politician on. Or some kind of leader. Most are
presidents, but there have been others, like Franklin.
The Dems have theirs (Jefferson, FDR, Kennedy--on the
50 cent piece) and there's at least one from the GOP I can think of (Lincoln).
If Reagan were to be put on there it may have to wait until
he's passed on. I don't think living people appear on US
currency; they certainly don't appear on stamps until
they have died. (I work for the post office and can tell you that 5 years has to have passed for a person to wind up on a stamp, but Presidents can go on right after they've died, as with Nixon, etc.)
A living person appears on Canadian money--Queen Elizabeth
II. Up until recent, a living person (well, he's supposedly still alive) appeared on Iraqi currency--
yup, you know who. But the recent new version of
Iraqi scrip is Saddam-free, yeah!

On a radio show today I heard some suggestions: "Put Bill Clinton on the quarter and we can bring back the
phrase 'a two-bit whore'..."

>>As one California Republican explained: "I feel more connection with Reagan. He's a Californian, also closer to us in history."
A sign that the Democratic party has been drifting to the left for a long time: Reagan once referred to his switching parties thusly--
"I didn't leave the Democratic Party. The Democratic
Party left me!" :)

While I tend to agree about not putting Reagan's face on the dime, I have no problem with the Navy naming an aircraft carrier after him. If ever there was a President who stood for a strong defense and deserved to be accorded such an honor, it was Reagan. As it is, given his current condition, as much as I hate to say it, he's been gone from us for at least the last couple of years.

And while we're at it, isn't it time for a little Mount Rushmore face-lift? Well... Now that you mention it...
