No. We have too many stupid laws that attempt to lift personal responsibility off the shoulders of careless people and on to the backs of everyone else, in aggregate. As a result, careless people get to continue to be careless, and the rest of us pay for it in higher premiums and more accidents.

Drivers are responsible for not hitting what's in front of them when operating a motor vehicle. That's where the line must be drawn.

We have given way in this culture, again and again, given ground to the bad guys, the freaks, and always, to the careless who have the excuse that it's the victim's fault for being in the way. We let pedophiles out of prison, so we imprison our kids. We fear to go out at night; we cower behind locked doors.

In Henrietta, Oklahoma, there is a little girl who might be about 2 years old now. When she was 8 months old she was raped. Her rapist has never been found, though the rape occurred in the bedroom next to where her parents slept, she had multiple broken bones, and ended up with a hysterectomy and colostomy because of her injuries...and...quite suspiciously, her grandmother is the one who took the baby to the doctor, the next day when her injuries were more than 8 hours old. Nobody's been punished. Her parents didn't lose custody. DNA evidence was "lost."

Small town Oklahoma. And somewhere out there is a baby girl who was supposed to be safe in her own nursery...and is forever ruined physically at least by what was done to her.

Please tell me why I should care about the promulgation of laws to punish people who pull off the road for even a trivial purpose? We have laws to provide for the investigation and punishment of someone who raped a baby...and all around me I see real evil going unpunished....

And you want someone who pulls off the side of the road to be called lawbreaker?

Don't you see what you are arguing for? Bad, weak, unenforceable, made-to-be-ignored laws weaken ALL laws. And all around us, don't you see the result of that?

They want to make SUVs illegal...keep guns away from us...because someone MIGHT get hurt. Something far more precious is lost every time laws are passed that restrict good people...but chaff true evil not at all.

"Bad, weak, unenforceable, made-to-be-ignored laws weaken ALL laws."

Excuse me ? Highway Patrol allready have to pull up and investigate cars stopped on the side of highways - Instead of just telling them to move ( which in your case they could not even do ) they would issue them a summons and tell them to move on.

"Drivers are responsible for not hitting what's in front of them when operating a motor vehicle."
How absurd -
I'm responsible for the ladder falling off the truck in front of me that caused me to bail for the sidelines, hoping that some woman has not decided to make her very first radio callin.

Why bother having any traffic lights at all if we can't stop babys from being raped.... ( demonstrating absurdity by being absurd )

It's just down to you and me now....

And I have to tell you, you think like a liberal, always looking for some isolated incident that can be used to lever away principle.

P.S. If there's a loose-looking load on the vehicle ahead of you, DON'T FOLLOW SO FREAKIN' CLOSE TAILGATER!

If I wasn't that close I wouldn't have seen the loose knots !

... and if I didn't have the sidelines to bail to, the jerk behind me would have smashed into me.

Idiots who use the breakdown lane as a way to cut through a traffic jam deserve all punishment they get. No one who is in a stopped vehicle that is flipped by the force of the impact deserves that.

What is your problem?

No argument to your statement -

But getting back to THIS occurance, it seems to be that the second driver lost control of his (her) vehicle while looking through papers, went out of the main lanes into the emergency breakdown lane, and hit a woman who was stopped there, not for any emergency.

Was he wrong? - certainly
Was she at fault? - No
Did she deserve to get hit? - noone does
Will she ever park on the side of a parkway to make a non-essential phone call again? - I think not

Will thinking people with any sort of common sense park on the side of a parkway to make non-essential phone calls after reading this ? - I hope not

But Go Ahead Flag-waving Conservative Americans !
Enjoy your God-given right to park for no good reason in lanes designated that only emergency vehicles may drive in...
Tell your kids to shut their eyes and cross the streets, shouting Pedestrian Right-of-Way !

Reading about this gave me a strong sense of deja vu.

In 1986, WNBC-AM traffic reporter (and sometime actress) Jane Dornacker was involved in an accident in which the helicopter she was flying in unexpectedly crashed into the East River. She fortunately survived, and refused to fly for several months, until someone at the station convinced her to return to the skies.

On October 22, 1986, lightning struck twice as the exact same thing occurred. Unlike the last time, however, there were two very important differences: She did not survive, and the crash happened LIVE.

(Warning: The audio you will hear at this link you may find disturbing.)
