Protectionist to eh? I am sure we agree on something. I just don't have a clue what it might be.

I stopped reading after the author showed his illiteracy by using "affects" when he meant "effects."

What a stupid article. Option in recession is never to set up BARRIER to trade - which is what Hawley-Smoot was. Is complete contrary to all rational thinking.

Thank you for one of the more valuable posts seen here this year. The global-leftists here keep dragging the Smoot-Hawley Tariff myths out at every opportunity. It's good to see a rebuttal.

Still pretending that protectionism isn't primarily associated with the extreme left in this country?

A grave grammatical triviality which gave you the excuse you needed to remain in denial.

Yah, mercantilism and protectionism are SO much better for the economy than free enterprise.
Not.
To: CobaltBlue
You are right it is not as good as free enterprise. But true free enterprise exists only as a theory. I can find nor have I ever found a true example of free enterprise on the macro level.

Correct version: You are right it is not as good as free enterprise. But true free enterprise exists only as a theory. I can >>NOT<< find nor have I ever found a true example of free enterprise on the macro level.

-----------------------------
You sound like one of those freshmen or sophomores at liberal girls colleges who breathlessly think they are intellectuals when thr tack --ism on to something they don't like or which inconveniences them. We have sexism, beautism, and now protectionism.
Hint (Trade to build up socialist countries was advocated by Karl Marx.)

Tarrifs are a form of taxation, the notion that taxation can lead to prosperity is asinine.
