First of all, satellites are unmanned. Secondly, I believe it was Harris computers that did most of the mini-computer work for NASA. Harris has struggled. Intel is the representative company for microcomputers, which obviously has done extremely well. Their premise was that the computer could be put on a single chip based on Moore's law (computing power doubles every 18 months, whether we go to the moon or not).
They went where the potential employees were, and that was near the research centers.
However, I would point out to you that biotechnology uses engineers as much as doctors, if not more. I believe few engineeers are employed at Scripps, and certainly not when the industry was in its infancy.
