Does anyone know why Hackworth retired as a colonel? Just curious.

'cause that's the rank he held when he left the Army.
I know, no one likes a smart a**.

Maybe that's why they called it Operation "Iron Fist"

All I know about "Hack" is, I'm glad that SOB moved out of Montana.
I was a fan of his at one time, but after spending alot of time on his website, I soon discovered that he is nothing more than a self grandizing blowhard.
Don't offer Criticism Hack unless you also offer a solution.
As an Army Officer you SHOULD know that.

I would feel great if all the people we killed were all enemy guerrillas, but I can't say that. We are probably turning many Iraqi against us and I am afraid instead of climbing out of the hole, we are digging ourselves in deeper." A Combat Leader
Or Combat Leader, many Iraqis may conclude the guerrillas are bad and turn against the terrorists. Lets say it's a wash.

Break it up into three mandates. Let them each have all the oil that is in their region. Let the sunni ba'athist scum eat sand.

Hack is a crank. The old guy who stands at the back of the City Council (or School Board or Volunteer Fire Department) meeting and sarcastically points out how those in charge are screwing everything up. Cranks come in two forms, those who have never accomplished anything and are bitter about it, and those who used to accomplish a lot but have been passed by -- and are bitter about it. Hack is the second type of course, but these days he is no more than a crank none the less.

I believe that Col. Hackworth believes somebody said such a thing to him. I doubt it really happened. This man thinks that he is simply the greatest thing since sliced bread. IMHO, he is not. I have read all of his books, About Face was the best of the lot.

The ROE [rules of engagement] under 'Iron Fist' is such that the US soldiers are to consider buildings, homes, cars to be hostile if enemy fire is received from them (regardless of who else is inside). It seems to many of us this is more an act of desperation ... Far from being an act of desperation, it sends a very relevant message: "Fail to turn in the insurgents, and you can die alongside them."

Hackworth's a military misery magnet. He's also very effeminate for a macho war hero, IMO.
