Well, I see very different starting points here.
Rush did not set foot on the slippery slope of drugs because he was choosing a personal indulgence. It was not a character flaw or amoral motivation that led him to pain-killing medication. We do know, however, that his medication is highly addictive and can easily absorb someone in a downward spiral of addiction.
Perhaps at the time Rush felt he could not allow himself the luxury of time to deal with his pain or what became his pain problem; and instead allowed himself an imagined luxury of the promise that he could/would deal with this - later.
But whatever happened, whatever the case, sooner, may have already been too late for Rush as he began to numb his pain with this highly addictive drug.
Suffice to say we view this through a different prism. I go back to my explanation for my believing that Rush is worth defending and worth supporting; adding that I do believe that the very reason this became a problem for Rush begs the obvious distinctions of circumstance and character as well.
I believe that Rush is a genuinely good person who with the best of intentions, became stuck in a very bad circumstance. A circumstance that went wildly wrong and out of control.
A dependence on pain medication surely affects more than the level of pain experienced. It appears that will and good judgment are susceptible as well, to a kind of numbing.
In any event, Rush is doing everything possible to right the wrong; and sharing his journey as much as possible or necessary.
With all he dealing with, I remain most appreciative that we are still able to listen to Rushs great humor and satire and most importantly we can still be informed by the best political commentary, ever.
