Hard-liners Stop Nobel Winner's Speech
December 03, 2003
Radio Free Europe
RFE/RL
Tehran -- A group of hard-line Iranian Islamists today prevented Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi from giving a speech at a women's university in Tehran.
The French AFP news agency quoted Al-Zahara University officials as well as Ebadi's office as saying around 50 students stopped her from speaking about women's and children's rights.
Protesters, some chanting "Death to Ebadi," accused her of being an Israeli agent, and said her prize was sponsored by the U.S. arms industry.
Earlier this year, Ebadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her campaigning for women's and children's rights as well as her defense of political dissidents.
