Silica has been a staple in professionally engineered germ warfare powders for decades. (The Soviet Union added to its powders resin and a silica dust called Aerosila formulation requiring high heat to create nanoparticles, says Alibek. U. S. labs have tested an Aerosil variant called Cab-O-Sil, and declassified U. S. intelligence reports state that Iraq's chemical and biological warfare labs imported tons of both Cab-O-Sil and Aerosil, also known as "solid smoke," in the 1980s).
Previously posted here... I found this old Iraqi internet request for for a supplier of Aerosil or Cab-o-sil, among other things, through a Ukrainian company called TP consulting. The date of the request was April 26th, 2001. It originally appeared here, but that link now requires a login. I was able to find it cached via Google...

Heres some takes on the article
1. Though the article allows that the technology could be from many states and corporations, if it were an American govt. product Batelle would be the place to look. IOW, NOT Detrick and thereby NOT Hatfill and not some doctor with access to germs but a germweapon production expert.
2. The theme that one year after, the FBI apparently changed its tune. Conveniently, this change sought evidence to prove the Lone Scientist (ie Hatfill) theory. Were some people more concerned with a prosecution (or cover up) than the truth? If one wanted to know how the Senate anthrax was made, wouldnt one tell Dugway the ingredients? The author is subtle on this point
but isnt it outrageous? Dugway was told to replicate NOT the anthrax found, but a hypothetical anthrax that someone like Hatfill could make with his abilities. Some could say it was just another charade.
3. What was Mr. Meselsons involvement? He has an interesting history, to say the least, with Sverdlovsk, Laos, etc. He always seems to take the line the Soviets/Russians are in compliance, unless presented with obvious proof otherwise. Strange. How much did he (or any other person) participate, even influence and guide the investigation? He has quite a bit of authority that might be compelling to some. He even publicly participated by writing a letter leading the public away from silica. You may know that Meselson was the president of the FAS before Barbara Hatch Rosenberg. Early in the case she spoke of three or four scientists she knew that came to the conclusion that Hatfill was involved. Was Meselson one of them? And Alibek, is he misleading, or has he been misled and the authority of his name misused? Does he really know how to read the pics presented, or was he urged to a conclusion?
4. The polymerized glass. What exactly was the chemical make-up? Wouldnt release of that information help trace it.
5. Finally, for now
Does Dr. Kay in Iraq know about the anthrax make-up? He could have been misled to, or not told the other story. A recent story here had him mention that Alpha revealed interesting new weaponized anthrax production techniques
well, was using polymerized glass one of them?

Gee, could a bunch of Harvard trained terrs using terr owned/controlled bio-pharm-tech companies like Hybridon do this? I'm guessing, but when this info travels, there may be a lot of younger generation scientists in the Western pharmaceutical industries, and older generation Soviet guys, who'll recognize the process...just not our old-school biowarriors.
Here's another question for you. NOtice that via Alibek the US knows that the Soviets/Russians developed similar tech? Well, did anyone tell Alibek about the polymerized glass for his opinion. And if no, why the hell not?

I think you'll find the contents of this article are what the FBI didn't want us to know - presumably because they feared some bushy-chinned terrorist could whip up a batch in the boondocks.
Why didn't Patrick and Alibek recognize what they saw ?
Possibly it was light years beyond what they had worked on !
Yesterday's research has a way of becoming "old hat" fast.
Just for the hell of it, let's rule out Russia,Iraq,Algeria,Syria, and Iran.
(Again, this is just for argument's sake !)
That would leave us: Pakistan,India,China, and N. Korea.
Let me do a bit of research and get back to this...

Why didn't Patrick and Alibek recognize what they saw ? Good point. Maybe they were too trusting, wanting to be part of the public discussion, and took a few steps beyond their knowledge, perhaps with some nudging by others with an agenda or prejudice.

Alpha and Charlie Reveal Secrets of Iraq's Anthrax Weaponization Techniques "...Two top Iraqi scientists, codenamed Charlie and Alpha, are helping the coalition to learn more about Iraq's anthrax programme, Kay said. The Iraqis had made shocking innovations in the milling and drying processes needed to weaponise anthrax. Almost every week there is a new discovery that boggles your mind, Kay said. ..."

What we do know is that during this same period, hundreds of years of experience was killed off with the loss of some dozen of the world-class micro-biologists and bio-chemists here in the states and among our Allied nations.
Who dun it?
Get ready, Folks. We're in for WAR.
