Of course conservatives want the best for their fellow man. We are not cold hearted egomaniacs who rejoice in the suffering of others.

We simply have a better way to distribute scarce resources.

Socialism removes the profit motive and the consequently - all incentive to perform and inovate.

Want proof? The war on poverty started in the 60s has spent billions and billions of dollars. Enough money so that if given to the population we'd all be rich. Yet, poverty still exists and over the decades billions have evaporated.

The free market is not the perfect way to distribute resources - but it is the best.

Look at this country in its first 100 years. Arguably this was the most capitalistic time in our history. During this time millions of wretched poor teamed into this country. And capitalism created wealth.

1. Canada can't pay for it's socialized medicine.
2. Canada ran out it's pharmecutical companies because they couldn't afford to research new drugs with the fixed prices. We pay for the research. We subsidize Canadian drugs.

A fundamental flaw in your reasoning is that government should have the power to control our lives. By controling health care you believe you have the right to dictate how we receive and pay for our care. You call this humanitarianism and believe that by this benevolence is a good thing. I think it is cancer. You see you have it all wrong. America is a nation of INDIVIDUALS that give certain authority to the government. These powers such as a common defense, legislative powers, and judicial powers are assigned by us per agreement. The Constitution is a contract. You would sacrifice individual freedom. You would sacrifice free will. You would sacrifice all rights of self determination in favor of a controlling social structure of government run by enlightened people such as yourself. To paraphrase Pink Floyd you offer us a leaf bowl in a cage.
Conservatives come in many forms. Some agree on almost nothing at all. This forum has taught me that. But the one common thread all agree on is individual liberty. We, the governed, do not consent to allow you to dictate how we live our lives. We are not without compassion to those less fortunate. We give far more than liberals. They give other peoples money. We give our own.
Mandated social programs do nothing but destroy. Welfare did much to destroy the black family. Welfare made many people dependent and weak. Like a drug it sapped individual effort. Welfare reform gave back dignity through work to many who had never known self respect. People that work, go to church, go to school, GROW!
I have a personal theory. I call it the pendulum. It swung far to the left in the sixties. It destroyed families and continues to rot our society with it's infection. The pendulum is swinging back. Kids now have short hair. They by and large are more conservative than the teachers in their classes. September 11th is their Pearl Harbor and as much as you and other liberals would have them forget and go back to sleep they wont. Socialism and the Democratic Party are fading. It is time for the growth of the responsible individual. With this growth comes a decreased need for mandated, harmful social programs. Socialism fails again.

Listen you stupid jerk! Hillery care would only serve to eliminate any incentive to develop new cures and treatments. It would also discourage anyone from becoming a doctor or medical researcher. Your plan would destroy the medical industry entirely.

The same kind of lines for gas we saw during the Carter years would occur for medical treatment. People with minor sicknesses would be killing over right and left. Your plan would only manage to hoard medical treatment for those few who sucked up the best to their government masters.

Capitalism is the ONLY effective way for consumers to communicate their needs to producers. Because, like it or not, medical care is a scarce resource that has more than one use. Medicine, surgeons, equipment, all these things must be produced, bought, or hired. They do not grow on trees or fall from the sky as manna. THEY NEVER WILL!!!!!<---(get that through your thick skull)

So these resources have to be rationed by someone or something. A government committee can never gather all the information necessary to decide how those resources should be used and distributed among the people effectively. Instead they tend to waste those resources. This causes an oversupply of things people aren't demanding and shortages of things they are. Like communist Russia with overflowing bins of guacamole and rutabaga but no meat or bread. If that were to occur in the medical industry it would KILL PEOPLE YOU NUTBURGER!!!

Only the concept of prices being communicated between millions of producers and consumers is efficient at managing this distribution. It is the ONLY way that has ever worked. And even though you repeat this collectivist BS over and over again YOU DO NOT HAVE A BETTER IDEA!!!!!

Well we are all a family in this great country of ours or so we should be. When that concept finally sinks in then the fears will melt away and perhaps we can move towards a healthier life in every way instead of this huge dysfunctional hodgepodge we call Conservatism.

On what basis do you conclude that federally controlled health care would be more efficient and responsive? The difference between you and conservatives is your politics are based on how you imagine things could be, conservatives base theirs on a realization of how things would be. When you're day dreaming about the wonders of socialized medicine, imagine a government HMO that operates as efficiently as the Post Office with the sensitivity of the IRS-and that HMO could not be bought, sold, dissolved or bankrupt. And its directors would have life tenure in their jobs, regardless of their corruption/incompetence. It would have no stockholders and be immune from lawsuit. Health care would be arbitrarily rationed. Periodic reorganization would generally increase its inefficiency, the cost of administration and the wages of its officials. Improvements would be created by semantically creating and manipulating goals, supported by vague, confusing statistics. And this HMO would be permanent, forever, in perpetuity.
