I don't know what it is about Latin Americans and government. Most of them are nice, decent people, but they seem utterly incapable of governing themselves. They produce either right-wing dictators or left-wing revolutionaries, one as bad as the other, and even in their most democratic phases government is permeated with corruption.
God knows American politics is permeated with corruption too, but somehow it rarely descends to the Mexican level.

I live mere miles from the border yet I avoid Mexico like the plague. I don't tour or shop where I know I would be exposing myself and my family to the corruption that exists among the people and the government of Mexico.
I do miss the surfing trips from my high school and college days, though.

Poor woman. Notice how this story is not getting any kind of major media attention?

This just blows my mind; outside of entering our country illegally, importing drugs, robbing a few banks, and knifing a few fellow countrymen, they seem such law abiding citizens.

Poor woman. Notice how this story is not getting any kind of major media attention? Imagine if four American cops were accused of raping an illegal immigrant, and the local DA wasn't sure whether he was going to press charges.

The problem is that Mexico doesn't have an illegal gringo immigrant problem.
Maybe gringos in the US should pick a city in Mexico - and 2 or 3 million of us move in, refuse to speak spanish, and eat sausages and pizza - and eventually elect our own gringo as cops.
Then, maybe we'll get justice.

We hunt very close to the Mexican border in Texas. We used to go across for dinner & to shop in the mercado, but no more. We have heard too many accounts of people accosted by criminals or criminal government officals. It was fun but no more.

Maybe gringos in the US should pick a city in Mexico...
It's called 'Lago de Chapala,' with about 35,000 American and Canadian citizens living there.
To: PokeyJoe
Well, I over-stated the numbers. Apparently there's about 12,000 foreigners living along the lake.

Thanks for the ping. Tourist from Iowa. Poor thing.
As San Diegians, we know we leave our rights and our safety behind in the US whenever we cross the border into Mexico. Personally, I haven't been in Tijuana for at least a decade and I have no plans to go anytime in the foreseeable future.

You're not kidding!
Notice how this international incident has gotten zero national coverage? Imagine if four US Border Patrol agents had raped and extorted a family of illegals crossing the border.

Where is the news in the corruption of Mexican officials?
To: Travis McGee
Excellent observation. Sometimes, the truth hurts, and your observation proves it.

C'mon, this isn't a Mexican traffic cop speeding ticket shakedown.
This is several Mexican officials RAPING a mom from Iowa IN THE COP SHOP, at the world's largest border crossing. Details not in this article are that she was raped more than once, while other cops IN UNIFORM stood lookout.
