I prefer the states to be as free as possible from federal control.

the issue of whether the federal government needs to be in the business of income redistribution on a national basis, and in setting national policies that have redistributionist consequences, and preclude the lowest common denominator effect emanating from individual states.

Well that sounds very idealist and principled... until one realizes that the very existance of government affects wealth creation and redistribution. We can look at one such way that is authorized in the Constitution:

Article I, Section 8. The Congress shall have power to...
To promote the progress of science and useful arts, by securing for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries;

Virtually any action taken by Government has an economic impact, and thus the flow and distribution (and redistribution) of income and wealth.

No, this is not a defense of the marxist social-welfare scams perpetrated by the 'Rats.

Those smears are hurled far too frequently.

But it is presented as food for thought about what is actually meant by income "redistribution".
Clearly the government IS involved in determining such policies, whether we like it or not.
