HINT: WASH any produce with skins (apples, cantaloupe, green peppers, watermelon, etc.) with soap and water on the outside BEFORE you cut into it.

Though some of the best uses for scallions involves eating them raw

Exactly. raw and clean green onions are excellent.

Now the next passage is pure speculation on my part.

An employee or somebody along the way in the chain to the Chi-Chi's, well how can I say this, put the green onions up where the sun doen't shine. You know the reason why straws are individually wrapped. This shipment of onions makes it to this particular Chi-Chi's and voila, Hepatitis A epidemic.

"largest restaurant hepatitis-a outbreak I think"

You're correct. It is. Which is why it's strange the story hasn't received very much national coverage. Guess Scott and Kobe were more important. No need to report a huge hepatitis outbreak.......

My speculation in reply #42 is based that only one restaurant in the area got the infected green onions.

The Food and Drug Administration announced yesterday that it has traced green onions behind outbreaks in Tennessee and Georgia to three Mexican firms.

I know I'm the tin foil king around here, but didn't the federal government warn that food supplies could be contaminated by AQ, and that they were warning people in agriculture to be aware of this kind of thing?

I've heard they fertilize their produce with people poop. Is that true?

If true, I don't care HOW MUCH cooking of said product "gets rid" of the problem. I'm not eating ANYTHING fertilized with "people poop". (When you consider the number of Mexicans urinating on side of North Carolina Interstates; you might want to keep an eye on the water supply, as well.)

They fertilize with human waste. Yes, I do remember the strawberry incident. People died in that one also.

Human fecal matter is not uncommon in Mexican groundwater.

In Mexico, human waste is routinely used as fertilizer. However, it is not legal to import such produce to the US. Unfortunately, "illegal" doesn't mean much anymore, unless you're trying to post the Ten Commandments in a public building.

Guess Scott and Kobe were more important.

Right, and now we have Michael.

A serious question. Are scallions and green onions the same?

The problem with "green onions" is that they are difficult to thoroughly clean. ALL green onions are dirty by nature, they grow in the ground. When that ground is fertilized by human waste, as many third world farmers do, there is danger of all kinds of disease. Unfortunately, many of these farmers come to this country and resume old customs. Which could lead to another of my immigration rants, but I'll stop at that.

Thanks for the link in your reply #45.

But the question is now why only the one restaurant infected by the green onions. Those farms probably send out tons of green onions. Why the outbreaks which can be directed towards individual restaurants.

As I stated in my sickening(I was thinking out of the box) reply #42, it could be some sick individual or terrorism on a small scale.

I believe you are correct. And even if they don't "fertilize" with it, I doubt whether Mexico demands that their farmers provide porta-pottys for their laborers. Where they gonna go? On your salad ingredients.

If the onions are contaminated by Hepatitis virus, the usual methods of washing fresh vegetables that are meant to be served without thorough cooking would not remove the virus. The only sure way to prevent illness of this type is to NEVER eat raw fruits or vegetables from a 3rd world country.

I live near a town that has been inundated with Mexican immigrants. Every Christmas, many of them make the trek to Mexico to see their relatives. And every year, following Christmas vacation, there is an outbreak of hepatitis in the local schools. No one speaks of this because to do so is racist and insensitive. The school nurse is even on the hush-hush. She makes it sound like a child turning yellow and being severely ill is just your routine childhood illness. Of course, this particular school has the largest white flight of open enrollment OUT of the district than any other school in the state.
