The military draft factor is a red herring here. This bill goes WAY beyond legitimate national defense needs

Although I agree with the Constitutionality of the military draft, I think you've hit the nail on the head here. It's not about the military, except insofar as Rangle and his ilk want to further raise the fever-pitch of the anti-war left by dangling a draft under their noses. (Shudder to think of that group in military service!)

Though more than volunteer troops may be needed in the long war that lies ahead, the military is not about to conscript more people than it actually needs, which would leave the vast majority of the 18 to 26 age group to serve at the whim of what the government determines to be "public service" -- which in today's politically-correct world could be anything from assisting at abortion clinics to teaching the Koran at Sunday School to free labor in a Congressional office or chauffeuring illegal aliens across the border.

And then there's a matter of another massive federal bureaucracy -- or an extension of the military bureaucracy -- needed to supervise all this "public service."

Besides, I could have called you an "ass", because that was how you are acting in this discussion.

But...I called you a toad because you are getting "run over" on the highway of logic, reason and argument.

How so? You really need to read this entire thread. Your ignorance is showing.

Look, I have nothing to do with whatever personal emotional trauma you may have suffered at the hands of sadists, so STOP TAKING IT OUT ON ME. I'm sick of you and your damn personal attacks and namecalling. You need far more help than we can give you on the 'net. As I've said, you know NOTHING about me and what *I* have endured, so just shut your stupid f-ing mouth before you make an even bigger ass out of yourself. And do NOT threaten me again. You will regret it.

Freedom to defend one's country when a threat is perceived...and freedom to care for one's own when a threat is not perceived.

And the freedom to take all you can grab, while picking and choosing how to help keep our freedom and liberty. Interesting concept.

Then how did you gain your freedom? Did you run away? Use the Underground Railroad? :)

Since we (most of us) have the option of home schooling, private school, etc., we don't have compulsory K-12 public school.

If we did it would be a form of slavery

Any governmet that must use conscription/slavery/forced servitude in an effort to "save" itself, does not deserve to survive.

It's called a "Term of Enlistment" perhaps you've herd of it. When it's over, if your still alive, and they have no further immediate need of you, you belong to yourself again.

When you enlist in the military you become "Military Property" for your term of service. During that time you DO NOT belong to yourself.

Even if that's true, it's your choice. No?

Fine. Explain to me how the "common defense" is served by taking a bunch of teenagers out to cut brush on Federally owned land, or pick up garbage, or whatever.

The bureaucracy required for this stupid idea would cost the earth, and the number of conscripts (slaves) would be staggering. More big government...more taxes......

Drafts in a time of general war are an inevitibile part of defending our republic. I grew up with one, and served to my benefit.

I see nothing constitutionally wrong in a draft/service obligation [with absolutely no deferments] for say a term of one year with a 'no combat clause', retaining our professional all volunteer combat forces.

Call it a citizens duty, a 'rite of passage', -- whatever... But this country needs all of its voting citizens to have a working knowledge of our constitutional obligations and to be trained in military defense.

Trust me, IT IS TRUE. If you'd have done it you would be in no doubt of the question.

Yes it certainly was MY CHOICE.

The entire point of this thread is that with the draft, IT WOULD NOT BE YOUR CHOICE.

Get it?

AND daughters.

To be frank, I wouldn't TRUST the government to protect my daughters. How is this going to work? Are they going to put these non-military slaves into barracks? Mile after mile of barracks filled with thousands of teens. How will they be supervised? How long before someone is beaten/raped/murdered?? Or assaulted by one of their "commanders"?

When did I say it was horrible? I'm proud and honored to have served. Doesn't mean I feel the government should be able to grab anyone they want ant FORCE THEM to them serve.

Had quit a good time for the most part. Got to work on A-10s, very cool.

That doesn't change the fact that the US Government OWNED ME for a period of time. They could have made my life miserable for 8 years or more if they wanted to, and there ain't squat I could have done about it.

No I did not reenlist. When you enlist for 4 years you also are signing up for another 4 years of "Inactive Reserve" In other words they can keep you or call you back at any time in those for years. And in time of war they can keep you as long as they want regardless of what you signed up for.

You're the one who wants to forcably send me and others to die in battle, I mean do you truly think that people are going to thank you for forcing them in such horrible situation. If you do, you're crazy.
